I have a question about online security, gaming and account access |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-01-11 02:13 PM by LynneSin
I do some online gaming.
So I'm a geek.
I found out that someone who has blatently accused me of some lies (lies which I can easily refute but he refuses to listen) had checked with one of the owners to see if my account was hacked. This is an online virtual community and I go there to help my friend with her business (she is unrelated to this story). The person accusing me is pretty well known in the community and has worked with the owners enough that he could have a friendly connection to check my online connection.
I'm very pissed - do I have a reason to be so?

1. I don't believe anyone here |
|
Is in a position to make a judgement call on this without a lot more information.
Are you saying that the Accuser has access to information that only yourself or the site owner/admin could know?

2. that could be the case but essentially yes |

I wouldn't use this as official legal advice just trying to feel things out so to speak.
But it would be like if I went to one of the admins here and asked if they would check your account for hacking and did so without your permission.

3. If someone got hold of my user name and password on DU |

And posted outrageously right-wing rhetoric, I think I'd be pretty happy if someone asked Skinner and gang to check if there were anomalies in my ISP or posting habits.
My attitude is that it's Skinner's site and to keep his members, he needs to deal with them openly and fairly to keep the trust of posters and I will reciprocate by trying to adhere to the rules; so no, I wouldn't mind at all if DU admins checked if my account had been hacked. Skinner after all, has complete access to my details and posting history anyway.
When you say 'hacked', do you mean that the sites admin database has been compromised from person/s outside the site?
In truth, it seems like a storm in a teacup to me. You could always vanish and return with a new identity or you could take it up with the site owner if you feel s/he has given away your personal details.
