Tobi got skunked last nite.

It happened last nite while we were out in the mountains. I washed her off with a hose and shampoo.
And then sprinkled her with baking soda. She doesn't smell too bad, unless you are right next to her.

Getting ready to bathe her in this -

Use about 1 qt of 3% peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a drizzle of dish soap. Mix it well and add a cup of water if needed and then lather up your dog right away.

Anybody have their own remedy? I have heard about tomato juice, but have heard that doesn't always work.

Guess these things happen when you have a curious puppy

1. I've only tried tomato juice on cats.
But, it always worked. Pour it on straight, soak to the skin. Be sure and shampoo out the juice! Good luck!

2. I've used the mix
you listed (peroxide, baking soda, soap, etc.) with some success. Mixed it up and used it all on a small (less than 20 pound) smelly dog. Worked well. That particular combination was recommended by both my vet and groomer.

Yeah, this was the same dog that likes to roll into wet bird poop.

her face still smells, not badly, and I don't know what to do about that.

I don't want to take a chance getting peroxide...or tomato juice...in those beautiful brown eyes.

edit to add that the mix made her coat soft and shiny.
An added bonus :)

6. We were up in the mountains cooling off when it happened and I'm just
praying that the carpet doesn't stink in our cabin.
It's all closed up until the next time we get there.

When it happened, Tobi ran inside and started rubbing her back all over the place.

If there's no skunks in Germany, I just may have to send you my dog. :)

7. I just googled skunks in Germany
evidently they found fossilized remains from 12 million years ago, but no skunks today. I've never seen or smelled one, my hubby says no we don't have them.

Only North American and some islands in the Indian/Pacific are still blessed to have these creatures.

8. Are you near a PetSmart?
They have a skunk odor remover that was highly recommended to me by a late friend who lived in ID. I wish I could remember the name, but it is a stock product. Barring that, check Tractor Supply (my other gotta-go-to store). I guess this is something I ought to take her advice on, since I live WAY out in the sticks, and yes, curious pups and skunks are a really bad mix.

And they never seem to encounter one during store hours, either (sigh), and it's a 25-mile trip each way.

9. My mixture worked really well.
Guess I will need to stock up on Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for our trips out to the mountains.

13. I'm bookmarking this!
for YNK (ya nevah know). We keep peroxide on hand as a matter of course (it seems to have a zillion uses) but we almost never have/use tomato juice. I'll be sure to get and keep a few cans. I live in the northern piedmont of NC close to VA, but in a very rural area. The girls are still curious about the deer, turkeys, quail, whip-poor-wills, frogs, and all the other things they shouldn't be touching or bothering. A skunking, I'm afraid, will be inevitable :P

10. We have used that mix on Talley TWICE in the last week or so...
she doesn't seem to get the hint about skunks...

That mixture has worked very well in getting the smell off of her except for around her face. I am reticent to use it around her eyes, but I am thinking maybe just a washcloth and liquid detergent might help there.

Now...I just have to get rid of the skunks.

It has been smoky (from the fires around here), hot (108* today) and when you add the skunk smell in the yard it becomes...apocalyptic.

12. Glad your pup no longer
has the Ode de Skunk wafting from the fur. You might want to grab some OdorMute (I think pet smart has it) before your next trip to the cabin just in case. It will get rid of the skunk smell and is safe for more carpet and furnishing.

15. oh, I've been though that twice with one of my dogs - twice too many
He's an escape artist and serious hunter, but wouldn't you know it, when he gets skunked is the only time he runs straight home to me. Both times it's happened at night so I'm not even sure he saw what did it, so I think he's learned nothing.

The first time I was visiting friends at their house - how's that for being a lovely houseguest?! Thankfully, they are dog lovers and appreciate him in particular.

Baking soda the first time, baking soda and peroxide the second time. Repeated baths got out most of it except around the neck (his extra thick fur there) and the ears. Both times he got some nasty oily stuff in his ears that I got out with a Q-Tip. Lots of Q-Tipping and old washcloths to the face, and eventually I didn't notice it any more.

Good luck with your cabin. He brushed off some skunk on the door to my apartment as I brought him in - I kept wondering why I smelled skunk right when I walked in the door - once I narrowed it down and scrubbed that part of the door, it got better.
