I adopted a dog today.
I posted an ad on my local craigslist saying I would like to adopt an adult dog. A woman about 50 miles away contacted me about a young male black lab who was rescued from a big city dog pound in Ohio, where he was about to be gassed. No history- collar, no tags. He was transported all the way to IL where he passed all the temperament tests. The person who had him had a beautiful home in the country (here in WI) with cats and dogs and young children and she had this lab with her for 2 days, no problems. She did a lot of preliminary medical treatment on him and gave him to me for free. There are some very wonderful people in this world.

He is a very well mannered dog- so far so good. He went right to Harry dog's spot on the couch (I don't consider that bad, but it made me cry). We are a match. I will have to get used to having a young, agile dog again- he chases rabbits and squirrels, and he doesn't know his name yet. Neither do I.

1. No name yet?
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 04:18 PM by in search of sanity
What about Larry? The name jumped in my head, after seeing the photo. Perhaps the name of your previous dog inspired it.

Oops -- where are my manners? Congratulations on finding a new best friend.

Edited to add oops

2. Hmmm.
Her kids were calling him Duke. She called him Dukie. On the way home I called him Doogie. When he started chasing the rabbit and I wanted to get his attention I tried MAX, REX, BOGIE, ROSCO, SAM, YODA, MORRY... nothing...

I will call him Larry and see if he responds. :hi:

3. Pretty dog, name him whatever you want, he will get used to it
I have worked in rescue for years, and we often have to name a dog. It is usually whatever the person bringing the dog in decides. Most people change the name when they take the dog home too. I call one of my boys goofball on a regular basis and he actually responds to it sometimes, his name is Eddie. No name him whatever you want and he will adjust. Congratulations on your new adoption, I think that rescues make the best pets because they usually know they have been rescued.

4. Congratulations to both of you !
Did they neuter him, too ? ( I'm a rescuer - I have to ask! ) If so, that's amazing that there was no adoption donation required.

He is a handsome guy. His name will come to you

5. I have a friend whose black lab is named "Hey You"
and she responds to it!

He has not been neutered and I will have that done because there are too many dogs. He is not aggressive at all though. Very nice dog. When I put down his bowl of food he came over and thanked me before he ate it. Harry used to do things like that.

I had to leave him for an hour and a half, which made me a little nervous. I don't have a crate. When I came home he had moved around some shoes and a stuffed rabbit. No destruction though.

He likes rabbits. :-)

17. I have a freind who adopted a cat and could not come up with a name for her..
He started saying "Hey You" to get her attention, and eventually that became her name. When he got a second cat, he called her "You too". So his cats are "Hey You!" and "You Too!"

9. Lucky you, he is beautiful. All labs seem to have such even
temperaments, they make great pets. I care for a yellow lab and I swear she is half human. It will surprise you how quickly he will call your place "home" The name will come to you out of the blue, don't try too hard.

10. His name is Jack.
He was trying to get up on my bed this morning and I said NO. Kept trying. I said DOWN. Kept trying. I said SIT. Kept trying. "You don't know Jack, do you?" He sat down and thumped his tail.

I took him out in the woods and let him off leash. When I called "Jack" he responded, so that's his name.

15. Congratulations..on the adorable pup, and his new name!!!!
I cannot help but think that perhaps it was Harry that led him to go to the same spot on the couch. He was still there watching over you to make sure you were ok, and now that he knows that you have found a pup to focus some of your love upon, he can rest happily.
You know how unselfish these guys are, and I would think that one of his wishes for you would be that you should find another pup to love as you loved him.

I smiled when I saw your thread. I know how lost you were feeling without Harry. Your new friend is beautiful and you did a great thing bringing him home to share with you....

As far as the name goes, heck, as stated upthread you can do just about anything. I just got my newest rescue yesterday and his fostermom had started calling him Zeus for me as soon as I applied for him (his original name was Payday and I did not care for that). My old girl Luna responded to the word "gravity" because my ex used to call her that as a joke until one day she started coming when called

I also have a friend who has a dog named "girlfriend" It's pretty funny to hear her scream 'Hey girlfriend!' across the dog park....

14. I still feel lost without Harry.
This dog will get me out and about, but it doesn't ease the pain one bit. I would do anything to have another day with him... its 3 weeks to the hour since he died.

Perhaps there will be moments that Jack will be of some help as well.

And I can tell he wants to go outside and play all the time. So he will get me moving. I have nearly forgotten how much fun young dogs are.

What a wonderful name and what a guy. It really seems to suit him.

That's kind of how I named my dog as well. He showed up one day...a stray.
I just kept trying names on for size and observing how he responded.

27. I don't think that was exactly his name but its close enough
and now that I've repeated it enough times its become his name. Its got to be something short enough to call but something you can say affectionately too.

He is a guy. He makes friends easily with other dogs and with people. He's funny around smaller dogs - he has to invent ways to play with them, but he does.

26. Congrats
what a beautiful boy.

I have a dog that picked his own name. We tried three different names over a period of several weeks with no success. Then noticed that he responded to a particular word that mom uses as a term of endearnment. Nobody else used that term to refer to him and mom saw him only infrequently. Go figure.

Thank you for adopting him and giving him another chance.

I think this will be good for both of you.

I know from experience that no dog can replace another beloved dog..

But I also know that they can work their way into your heart in a different way. He's not Harry, he's different. But you will love him too just the same.

I'm sure Harry would approve.
