Houston SPCA sheltering 1,000 hurricane animals
Noah would feel right at home at the Houston SPCA, which has taken in about a thousand animals from communities enduring a major beating from Hurricane Ike.

In addition to hundreds of dogs and cats, the shelter collected horses, ducks, goats, iguanas and even a bear as part of its menagerie in the days leading up to the storm — which crashed ashore before dawn Saturday.

apparently they have been contacted to come in and help and they are doing just that.

>> Wednesday, Sept. 18-- Today, we received an urgent request from officials in Texas to send more animal rescuers to the southeastern Texas coast. They desperately need all the people we can send to rescue stranded pets and livestock. Six additional professional animal care and rescue staff from the Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Unit are responding to the call.

Currently, our ten-member Disaster Response Team is in hurricane-ravaged Galveston working tirelessly to save as many pets as possible. Our team has been designated the lead animal rescue agency in the Galveston area. And, their rescue and sheltering work has garnered national attention -- Rescuer Kyle Held was interviewed by NBC/MSNBC News as he was standing atop the rubble of a destroyed home.

“For people who have lost everything, including their homes, the knowledge that we will do everything to find and return their pets to safety is a reassuring feeling,” said Carmen Skelly, team leader of the HSMO Disaster Response Team.
We are using most of our available rescue equipment to save pets, including our large animal rescue trailer that holds 100 animals, 50 and 15-animal vans, 4-wheel drive trucks, horse trailers, our swift-water animal rescue boat, an all-terrain vehicle, generators, chain saws, and other large animal rescue equipment.

Back in Missouri, we are keeping a wary and watchful eye over the rising waters. Last weekend, a second HSMO Disaster Response Team helped rescue pets in flooded Silex, Mo. And, we’re on the ready to assist in Jefferson County if needed this week.

4. They also need 10-day foster homes
http://www.houstonspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Hurricane_Ike_Updates

In the wake of Hurricane Ike, many animals have been lost, abandoned, and injured on Galveston Island. The Houston SPCA is asking the community to help give these storm victims a second chance at life by participating in “Operation Save a Life.”

The Houston SPCA’s “Operation Save a Life” is asking every family who is able to foster a Galveston pet for ten days. If after ten days, the displaced animal is not reclaimed by its original owner, the foster parent has the option to adopt the animal or return him/her to the shelter for placement.

There are a few requirements to participate in “Operation Save A Life.”

· Current pets in a foster home must be fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

· Each home must keep foster pets in a completely separate room or area from current pets.

· Renters must have permission from their landlords and present a lease agreement.

· Foster parents must present a photo ID and provide current contact information.

· Each foster parent will also be required to sign a contract with the understanding that the animal belongs to the Houston SPCA during its foster care.

· Foster families will not be responsible for veterinary care during the ten-day foster period.
