Tell me your doggie itch remedies.

I have one dog with no problems ever. The younger dog suddenly developed an itch over the last year. She is 8 years old. Very healthy and active, but this itch is driving her crazy (and me too).

Judging from earlier vet experiences with a dog I had long ago, I don't think I'll get an answer there.

1. I tried a few things

My dog swims ... a lot. (easily 8 hours a day if we let him) His coat dries out terribly causing him to itch like crazy. For his hard core itching I used a salmon oil product (http://www.grizzlypetproducts.com/) which was the only thing that worked. The only problem I had with this product was his coat would smell very "dog" when I gave him too much of it. But no other oil or pill worked for him at all.

If your dog doesn't have a terrible itch problem, perhaps just some vitamin E or rose oil could do the trick. Or maybe an oatmeal bath. There are many oatmeal bath products for dogs on the market that might help.

2. I agree the Oatmeal bath is a good idea.

Also you may want to test the proteins and other food types that your dog is eating.

It is possible that he could be allergic to one of many things.

I feed my dogs a Trout and Sweet Potato kibble, my 4 year old Viszla mix has really bad ear and skin problems.

Also, you may want to ask your vet about allergies to fleas.

3. In addition to the other things, try changing her to a non-allergenic food to

see if that helps. Allergies can develop later in life..

There are several grain-free foods on the market now.

During the pet food scare, I was making them food myself and she never had this problem.

12. We had a poodle that was allergic to everything but chicken

oatmeal and green beans. We started making our own food and never looked back. That was 12 yrs ago and we have never looked back. Now we have bichons that are susceptable to bladder stones caused by food high in calcium. They only get turkey, rice and veg-all. The ground turkey that wally world sells for &1.68 a lb is wonderful and easy. Mixed with rice and veg-all, it makes a great meal for them.

7. Be careful what you feed

It is best to try and find a Gluten Free food. Pets many times will itch with diets that have Gluten in them. I use Honest Kitchen, I believe Thrive & Embark are gluten free and my kiddos love it.

9. This product works wonders

OXY MED, by Tropiclean - Oatmeal, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B5, Omega 3 and 6, Salycyclic Acid (Beta-hydroxys), Alpha Hydroxys, Kava Extract, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Malic Acid.

10. I have a sure fix.

After the oatmeal bath, squirt Genesis Topical spray three times a day, and put a cone on the dog's head until the wound heals.

11. Ditto the suggestions for changing your dog's diet. My

best friend has a dalmation that had an itchy problem and she changed to a dogfood that had salmon in it. Maybe you should try to eliminat corn and see if that works. I order dog food from Petfood Direct--Wysong's Anergen Formula. It's mostly ground lamb and rice and my dog loves it. It comes in 4 lb. bags and is available in 4 bag lots for $16.99, plus shipping, but they do give discounts up to 20% after you become an established customer. I think there are lamb & rice formulas available at the grocery store. Corn seems to be a staple in most commercial petfoods, and it often causes skin and digestion problems for our pets.

Newman's Own makes a lamb-rice catfood and you might check them out. Kroger carries some of their products, but none of the canned cat foods that my kitties like.
