My cat Spooky has a mass on his forehead

it seemed to have sprung up overnight... it was about the size of a garbanzo bean and hard as bone, we thought he had bonk his head and the bump would go away..... then just yesterday it seemed to have some soft swelling around it. And he seemed to finally be feeling a bit of discomfort from it, then, a sneezing fit... took him to the vet, they are not sure but took a sample an we are awaiting the results.... so sad, Pook is our little baby, keeps us on our schedule and sleeps with us...

pretty sure he is going to need surgery no matter what the results...

i'm sick with worry

If the vet drew some fluid from it, they should have been able to diagnose it in the office. Sending good vibes that it goes away on its own :hug:.

4. 'hard as bone' doesn't really sound like fat to me

It sounds more like a cut/bruise that took on an infection. That happened to my pup. Is there any indication of a bite or a puncture?

But can understand why you are worried!

One of my guys did something similar...went from just fine one day to carrying left front paw with ENORMOUS swelling at the joint the next morning.
Thought he'd broken it...and it hurt him so badly they had to sedate him in order to examine it. :cry:

Turned out to be just an abcess, but it was located right on the joint (luckily not IN the joint).
Vet told me it's not unusual for abcesses to go from zero to ZOMG! swelling overnight.

10. Years ago, that happened to my dog. Also happened to a friend's cat.

In my dog's case, it was just a cyst. The vet drained the fluid, the lump was gone and everything was fine. :-) I was surprised that fluid caused it because it was very hard. It felt like there was a gumball stuck in his head!

With my friend's cat, it was some sort of abscess. Pus was drained, antibiotics were given and everything was fine. :-)

I know you're scared - I would be, too - but it could be something relatively minor. Hang in there. Let us know what the vet says. Good luck! :hug:

11. UPDATE

vet called a little awhile ago to tell me that they LOST THE FUCKING SAMPLE

I had to take poor Pook back in to get jabbed again :(

now for more wait


I'm so pissed... I think once I get a diagnosis I will take him to another vet for confirmation and treatment

I still think it's going to be ok but I would definitely speak to the vets about that. Not cool. At all.

14. I think finding a new vet is a good idea.

Are they doing a needle aspirate? And if so, can't they get some type of idea of what this is immediately by looking at the cells under a microscope?

Most vets do a needle aspirate routinely, and then send the sample out for further testing if there is any question as to what the mass is.

I think they send all their samples out, I dunno, but from the get go the vet seemed very puzzled about what it could be

13. Crossing my fingers that it's just a cyst -

Moggy developed one above his eye when he was 3 years old right about in the spot some hot candle wax dripped on him before he figured out that he couldn't wander on a table with lit candle sticks on it before dinner.
It looked nasty when it developed,hard and almost seemed like it was part of his forehead, and it occasionally flared up to the size of a pea during the summer or when he was stressed, but it never caused him any pain or problems for over 14 years after.
Most times it was barely noticeable, about the size of the head of a quilting pin after the first flare-up.

17. Good News

This Morning the puffiness seems to have subsided, seems less tender to touch, and it is back to mostly a hard bump, and he seems in a bit better spirits

I called and confirmed that they actually have the sample...but still no results
