What the heck? FDA report: Pentobarbital residue in dry dog food?

Just doing some searching about dog foods and illnesses, and found that
the FDA had some analysis of different dog foods, and the Pentobarbital content.

Pentobarbital is an anesthetizing drug used for dogs and other animals, such as horses and cattle. Because it is also widely used for humane euthanasia of dogs, cats and other animals, the most likely way that pentobarbital could get into dog food would be in rendered animal products. Rendered products come from a process that converts animal tissues to feed ingredients.

1. What in heck is put into these foods, floor sweepings? With all

the money the pet food industry makes yearly, it's time they straightened up. All kinds of things are going wrong with both the pet food and pet medication fields.

I know people who have had major Vet bills for either food or medication related problems with their cats and dogs. This industry does not police itself.

When something happens, there is very little anyone can do about it.

2. Poison and iffy brands

Ol' Roy seems to always have recalls and is listed I think as one of Walmart's favorites. Nutro was involved with the big recall two years ago. I would recommend buying a pet food that has listed that it is made in the USA at a controlled factory with US ingredients. Of course this is all hard to track and to know who is telling the truth but a person is better off spending a little more on perhaps a better food and feeding their pet less overall. Of course, add in the drugs found in regular tap water and you have a recipe for disaster. So add the cost of a water filter to your list. :dilemma:

5. Pretty useless - 10 year old information

I'd venture a guess that most of these companies have changed their formulations in that time, and I personally know of at least two that have.

6. The phenobarbitol is the residue from what was used to kill the animals...

disgustingly..this is particularly true for brands that use the carcasses of "euthanized" = slaughtered dogs from kill shelters, as part of their ingredients. You can pretty much bet that "meat Meal" = domestic pet carcass remains.

This is disgusting and sad. It is also a good reason to make sure you buy high quality food for your pet, and always check the ingredients.

If you can buy it in a supermarket, you should never buy it.
