What do you do when your kitty (dog) is sleeping on something you want?
I wear a sweater a lot around the house. If I take it off I put it on the bed. Boogsters likes to sleep on it. He'll choose that one spot from the entire bed. I once read that the Prophet Mohamed cut off the sleeve on one of his robes instead of waking a sleeping cat. I don't know if that is part of the reason I feel guilty if I disturbed Boogie to get my sweater. Some times I just put on one I don't like so much so I don't have to wake him.
Does anyone else do that?

| 1. No. My cat takes great pleasure in waking me about 5 times a |

night. But also, I don't leave anything out, other than a clean towel for him to sleep on. If I give him a towel, or put it where he wants to sleep, then he sleeps on it, and I think he likes it. But he will lay on any of my clothes that I lay out. He likes it. But mostly, since he is getting older, near 20, he likes to lay on me. Particularly when I read. dc

When I put my clean laundry on the bed before folding it, he is right there, laying on the pile. Fortunately, he doesn't wake me during the night. I'm usually up every two hours anyway because I drink a lot of tea. He does try to wake me in the mornings too early sometimes. A couple of weeks ago when he was making noise for me to get up and let him out of the room, I reached over for the spray bottle (without my glasses) and promptly sprayed myself! LOL. All he needs is the sight of it anyway. I just went back to sleep a little damp.

| 2. Gently wake him with pets and soft talk and roll him off the object. |

I have a small apt. and inevitably stuff ends up on my bed. Sebastian loves to sleep on my purse, whether it is a leather handbag or fabric backpack. Neither sounds comfortable to me -- both are lumpy and kind of hard. I let him sleep there until I have to leave and need my purse. Several times, I've had to wake him to get my purse. At this point, I think he knows he takes a chance of my waking him if he sleeps on my purse.

During the night, Boogie usually sleeps on the big pillow I have for him on my bed. But before I get to bed, he is usually on my side. When he sees me coming, I just say, "move over", and he goes to his pillow. It's just that when he is deeply asleep, I hate to have to wake him. But, they are taking their chances, aren't they? They must be attracted to the odor of us. Do you think?

| 6. Odor, they sometimes know you by your smell, rather than sight, |
|
their eyes are not real good. Mine hates it when I go out. He likes to smell my breath when I come back. To see what I had to eat. He won't kiss me or lick me, but he will smell my breath and touch my lower lip with his mouth. Funny feeling. dc

| 7. Depends on how badly I need what's being slept on... |
|
..and if I absolutely have to extract the item I do it as gently (and with apologies!) as possible. If I can I'll replace it with something 'better', say...a garment that hasn't been washed yet. That's usually acceptable coin.
Hey, don't ask me...I just obey whims, fancies, notions and demands. I don't try to make sense of them....

make other arrangements to leave my sweater somewhere else. Just never think about it until I see him sleeping on it.
The up side is, if I have to leave for a few days, I can put something out so he still has the comfort of sleeping on my clothes :silly:
I find myself wanting to tell my Bonnie story. When I got her from the shelter, she was a tiny new thing. They had her out in front and she was walking all around the reception counter top. Obviously a personality. Our neighbors called her "Crystal" because her longish fur was a sparkly silver white. After a couple of years in that location, we decided to take a job out of state. One of the neighbors had a couple of ferrets, a dog and birds. She agreed to take Bonnie. We ended up not liking the new job, so after three months we went back to Vegas. We rented way on the opposite side of town from our former residence. I called the neighbor to see if she wanted us to take Bonnie back. She said Bonnie had not come inside at all for three months. She ate from the porch :( . So we got her. She was a little nervous, and it took a while to get her brushed out. But she went from moving box to moving box sniffing and figured out she was home. She became more relaxed with each sniff. I think about her a lot. She was left with my ex when I moved back to Texas.

| 9. I know my cat will go right back to sleep |
|
It's a compliment, really, when an animal wants to sleep on a piece of clothing that smells like you. Your smell makes them feel safe.
However, mine likes to move in as soon as I lay it out on the bed. I move her without remorse. I know she'll be sacked out on my jammies within five minutes.
I understand Mohammad's reluctance to disturb a furry friend. In fact, I find that story so human I hope it's true.

Sacked on your jammies ...
I like the story about Mohammad too. Gives one a different perspective.
Embarrassingly, it was so long ago when I read that (probably in a cat book), that I thought the writer was referring to Mohammad ALI. It took a long time for me to figure out it was the prophet.

| 12. Cats own whatever they are on at the moment. My kitty would |
|
seem to turn to jelly if I tried to move her off of something I needed. She would also run to the dryer as soon as the buzzer went off. She'd wait until I started to fold the clothes and jump into the basket. She would not move, no matter what I did. Once the clothes cooled, she would get up, stretch and go somewhere else. Rather than disturb her, I would carry the pile and leave the basket for her. She would also run to my lap if I had taken a bath and put robe and slippers on before watching TV. When I went to bed, she would hop up and wait for me to spread the robe out so she could spend the night on it. I would have to move her in the morning. I miss the company, she died years ago and I am still without a new kitty. Someday.

| 13. I think that a thing belongs whereever the owner puts it. So if someone |
|
puts their sweater down, that's where it belongs. Adults get to decide those things. The problem is that the cat interprets that as a place for them to sleep, lounge, etc. My cat loves to take my chair when I get up. It's warm, and he figures if it's a good place (to me) so he'll like it too. Sometimes, when I come back he will look at me "oh, you want your chair back?" and he'll move. Not always. People consider tables or counters as tables and counters. The cat does not. The cat sees those as cat platforms. Places that you have conveniently provided to give the cat a place to go. I think a cat knows more about being a cat than any human. Thus I like to let my cat decide what he is supposed to do. I like his independence. dc

Boogie prefers to sleep on the sheets rather than the cover spread. He's in heaven if I don't make the bed

blanket or the cover spread. In cooler weather, I fold a blanket and put it at the foot just for him. dc
