My Penny...

Adopted in March 2008 from a shelter that rescues cats from other shelters when they go on the euthanasia list. When I walked in she ran over to me, jumped up on a table and put her sweet little face in my hand. She has the softest fur imaginable, impeccable manners, and a happy disposition. The shelter had paid over $3K for surgery to her face and she has no molars on her left side and prefers only Fancy Feast in gravy. They estimate that she was about five years old at the time of her rescue. She is the most playful kitty I have ever had and a total love.

5. She is my kitty love sponge!

She wears out a new toy every two weeks, on average, and knows that all toys that come into the house belong to her. I'm just as content to have her as she is to be here. :hi:

7. Adopted adult kitties are grateful

and usually have manners and a decent vocabulary.

I think the old lady cat is my last one since I don't want to chance outliving a pet.

If I crack, though, it'll be an elderly cat sitting on death row.

9. Since my kitties usually live to push up against 20 years old,

I decided not to adopt a kitten (or pair of kittens) this time. We adopted a boy at the same time, from the same room, but he 'belongs' to my husband. He likes me, but when Mr. Pup is in the house he has no use for me. Penny is half his size and kicks his butt several times a day for territorial infringement. She definitely rules this house! I would recommend adopting a mature cat to anyone, and Penny could be the poster kitty for that. :hi:

11. I adopted two adult rescues a year apart

The boy kitty was a neglected and depressed Himalayan. He was stand offish for the first 3 months, then a switch tripped in his head and he was my kitty for the rest of his life. The only problem was that he understood Spanish much better than English, so I had to offer him comida instead of dinner. "No!" is the same in both languages. He made it to 17 and I miss him. Designer cats don't seem to have the long lifespan of wild and hardy varieties.

The girl kitty is an abused Maine Coon. Even after 13 years of constant pampering, she's still head shy and I doubt she'll ever trust me completely. She's the ultimate lap cat, though, I've never had a better one. She'll be 17 this summer, but she's going strong. She must've heard me typing about her because she just hopped up into my lap.

I've had cats my entire adult life and for most of my kidhood. I've always been a total cat person, although there have been dogs here and there that I've liked.

I can't imagine being without one, but we'll see when the old girl dies.

12. When Dusty crossed the Rainbow Bridge he was

nearly seventeen. His brother, Mr. Spitz, died of kidney failure just before his 15th birthday (I think, from Chinese tainted Iams). We adopted them from a shelter when they were tiny, starving babies. Although they loved us they never sat on laps until the final few months of their lives. I think that is because they bonded with Sarge (most fabulous cat ever) instead of with us when they first came into our lives, so I definitely understand how abusive memories are so deeply imprinted on kitties so that they are never fully able to "get over it." Still, I'm sure your girl kitty trusts you and appreciates the safe place, good food, and affection you've given her for the better part of her life. Sorry for the loss of your sweet boy. Home made cats are the best!

10. Penny is an excellent trainer and has taught me when to give treats

(often) and how she likes them (plentiful) and I am coming along nicely in her estimation. She has a ginger-tabby tail that you can't see in the photo and she is also great at cornering when we play feather-on-a-stick. She has never threatened me with fang or claw and I've never heard her hiss. I'm totally smitten! :loveya:
