There are two foxes in our neighborhood. One is far larger than the other and bold as can be. Big and Little are enthralled with him - or at war, I am not sure which. Little is the brains of our pack - our Alpha. Big is the . . . . whatever. She's a happy go lucky dog who is a wimp toward anyone and anything. But she loves to "scent it up" with whoever goes through the yard.. Cats, other dogs, the foxes, deer, whatever. Today she came in after having rolled in pee from the big fox. I am assuming that to be the case, as I saw him in the yard just before Sparkly let them out and then screamed when they came back in.

I put some fru fru hand soap in a spray bottle and wet her fur down with that. Didn't touch the smell. Then I lathered her up and rinsed her with a spray bottle. No luck. Then I hosed her off. That has gotten most of it but she still smells like an animal toilet.

I know the behavior is normal, but what gets the smell out? We don't like to wash our dogs unless they *really* need it. Plus, both of them have those double coats that first resist water and then never dry. Anyway, here's her wet, bedraggled, stinky self, with her cohort next to her, looking all innocent.

What cuts that smell?

1. Peroxide is recommended for skunk, think that would work?

It is cheap, mix with baking soda and Dawn.

I've used that mix to clear all sorts of odors my little darlings have managed to pick up by rolling in various unsavory things.........

Safe for them though you will have to soak them in it. Works on all natural odors including skunk. I usually get it online but you should be able find it in a store near you. Good luck and be ready for repeats since the fox seem to be hanging around.

stuff for pets that get into skunks and the Vet or a Petco might have it.

8. So far, this seems to be working

If you have never tried to bathe a German Shepherd Dog, you're missing one of life's great adventures. They're double coated. (Actually, we're doubly lucky, Little, the Border Collie, is also double coated) A double coated dog is nearly waterproof.

In the case of dogs with a penchant for scenting themselves in things like fox or deer pee, this is a good thing. The wiped on pee is on the surface coat, mostly. And these big doggie wipes are pretty effective at removing most of it. To be sure, some smell lingers. If she comes in freshly scented as a 10, after a few minutes with the wipe in just that one area where she anointed herself, the smell is reduced to maybe a one. And *that* is a far cry better than it was!

Maybe she'll just stick with fetching .... ya think?

9. Glad something works and your wipes

well really the thought of bathing a GSD reminded me of Bingo bath, which would probably work too. It really works for winter baths on the big guy here. http://www.bingobath.com/

10. Doggy perfume

My guess is that he's planning to get that SOB one of these days and covering up his own scent with fox pee will help the effort.
