Lovely cat named "Calypso" needs home

Please Help Calypso - Her Time is Running Out!
A beautiful marmalade Persian cat named Calypso needs our help, and soon! She used to live with an elderly gentleman who passed away recently and his daughter, who promised to take care of the cat, instead threatened to dump her at the NYC animal shelter. And we all know what that would mean for this friendly, young cat.

She's spayed and has all her vet care, but a kind person has volunteered to be sure she's up to date on everything if a transport, or foster home, or even a new home, can be found. In fact, I will take her myself if a transport can be set up. She reminds me of one I used to have...

Calypso, about 3-5 years old, likes to be with people and talks a lot. She's currently in a very temporary foster home, until Saturday only, and gets along with the cats there.

The person who wrote the above is trying to find a home for this beautiful cat and she is a retired veterinarian. She didn't have a current picture to post but had a picture of another cat that looks like Calypso. If anyone thinks they might be interested, please contact her. She is a special cat with special folks looking out for her! :)

1. Are there any Persian rescue groups in the area. That's where

I'd start. I work with a group that tries to get animals rescued from the shelter before their euthanasia date. We post their pictures on facebook and contact rescue groups. The purebred rescues are the best, esp. those that also take mixed breeds. I will often just google a phrase such as "persian cat rescue groups in ???? City and State.

If you are a member of facebook, post her picture and send it out to all your friends asking them to cross post it. We have be amazed at how effective facebook has been in helping to place animals. Of course you always have to check out people thoroughly, and that is why our group always deals with profession rescue groups who are licensed.

2. great ending for Calypso!!

Happy Day For Calypso! Adopted!
Well, Calypso got very lucky and is no longer in danger. Sometimes, I think, just starting a wave of interest jostles the universe enough to initiate a chain of events we weren't expecting, but ends up being for the best.

Calypso was literally dumped on the streets of New York City after being a pampered house pet for her 3 or so years. But her rescuers knew the people involved and were able to pick up the cat before she could run far or get into trouble. I was asked to help, and I spread the word.

Thanks to everyone who jumped in to give this little gal a chance. When they realized she would go to strangers, they decided to keep her themselves. And this is fine. They are dedicated cat lovers. And I will be able to get progress reports, too! There is comfort in knowing that contact will be possible. Sometimes we lose that with adoptions.

4. all I can say is this

I hope that if something were to happen to me that someone would come along and care for my beloved cats if no one was left. This is a real possibility in my case and I doubt I'll be adopting any more cats in the future because of this fear.

I've seen this happen so many times - the owner dies and the cat/dog ends up at the local shelter. :(

I am very glad Calypso found a new home. She deserves it as do all animals out there in the world. :D

5. I understand your concern for your pets...

if something happens to you. I am a member of North Shore Animal League's Surviving Pet Care Program. All you have to do is to enroll your pets in one of the following: put a bequest in your will or living trust; name the Animal League as a beneficiary of your life insurance or qualified retirement plan; or make a charitable gift annuity or trust to the League. In turn, they will ensure that your pets are transported to the League upon your death and that they will be taken care of until they can be adopted into a new home. All you have to do is to name a representative, family member or executor of your will that can arrange for the transportation to the League. I have peace of mind in knowing that whatever cats I have upon my death or if I'm unable to care for them at a future date, they will be taken care of and will not end up at a shelter. I chose the League partly because of their good reputation and also that I'm a native New Yorker. They are located in Port Washington on the Island. Check it out.

I've donated to them before but hadn't in awhile and didn't know they had that program. Not that I would need it for many, many more years but it is good to know that program is out there. Two years ago one of my good friends died unexpectedly leaving five cats. I took three of them, in part because two were originally mine that lived outside that she adopted. The extra one I got because her adoption fell through and the other people who would have taken her didn't seem to really want a cat and would have made her live outside. Since she is such a shy cat, I didn't think that would be the best for her.

10. I've been in this program since 1993...

I'm so happy and relieved that I have a place for my kitty-kids to go to whenever I pass to the great beyond. I also have a Power of Attorney that states that my trusted lawyer and executor of my will has the power to get my guys to North Shore when the time comes. You might want to start planning now as you never know what may happen in the future. I started to plan when I was in my early 40s and I'm glad I did. It takes a great weight off my mind knowing that they will be taken care of in a good place.

8. I actually planned for my cats when I bought life insurance.

I had decided that I should have my own policy separate from work so that if I lost my job I would still be covered. I calculated the cost of caring for my cats into my "final expenses" and talked to a friend about being my "kitty god-mother." If she goes before me, I will have to figure out a plan B! LOL! But I know that the shelter I volunteer with would assist if needed.

and if I didn't live so far away I might be tempted. Slightly.

Purebred cats often do quite well in shelters. Shelters give them a little extra chance to be adopted because a lot of people will take them, knowing it's the only way they'd ever get a designer cat. There was a waiting list for my old Himalayan tomcat at the shelter. I got him because the old bugger fell asleep in my lap while I was talking to them.
