A new puppy-mill pet store opened up a few weeks ago and these women purchase their puppies from some of the worst mass breeding facilities in the mid-west. We want Newport Beach-Corona del Mar, Ca. to understand that cats and dogs should never be available for sale in our town's/cities or county. Los Angeles county is beginning to take the lead and many cities there have now banned the sale of non-rescued dogs and cats in pet stores.

2. There are reputable breeders out there that are not puppy mills

I definitely think that puppy-mill sales should be banned. But what about regular breeders who treat their dogs well?

There are many good dog breeders that take the best care of their dogs. Puppy mill breeders care not about breeds or dogs, only profits.

That's pretty anti-responsible breeder.

Sorry, but rescue dogs aren't for everyone, and responsible breeding is important to breed out genetic health issues.

If you want a law that gets rid of puppy mills, pet shops and backyard breeders than make a law forbidding that rather than including responsible breeders that are important and so that people can have dogs from puppy-hood throughout their whole lifetime (likely reaching a normal lifespan) without having to likely deal with expensive and debilitating health problems.

A law that throws the baby out with the bathwater and simply doesn't work for many people is just stupid. Responsible breeding should be ENCOURAGED not banned.

9. Wouldn't it be great if the only place to get a dog

was from a reputable breeder? One that isn't inbreeding their animals with all kinds of genetic medical problems.

And wouldn't it be fabulous if all of our municipal shelters were used for lost and found pets whose owners are desperate to get their pet back home? Or temporary housing during natural disasters/emergency situations?

Somewhere over the rainbow...

And I wouldn't have 10 dogs at my house (fosters) waiting for someone to fall in love with them and adopt them, one by one. I would love to go on vacation or just take a weekend off from adoption events.

6. I believe they are focusing on "in pet stores"

From what I have read before reputable breeders don't sell their puppies and kittens to pet stores where just anyone can get one, they like to meet the person who wants a pet from them and learn as much about them as the potential pet owner wants to know about the pup/kitten and its parents.

Pet Stores are notorious for buying from puppy mills. Banning sales in pet stores shouldn't harm good breeders at all.

7. Pet stores

Pet stores would be smarter to focus on helping humane societies to adopt out rescue pets only. My husband and I have made several pet supply stores very happy since we adopted our dog. None of these stores sell puppies or kittens but all help the humane society in some way. Pet Smart has dogs and cats from the shelter available to adopt in their store, which is very smart because when you get that cute little critter you will need food, bowls, a bed, a collar, treats, toys...... The two locally owned stores sponsor various humane society events. I would think it would be very much a winning proposition to promote adoption.

8. Irresponsible breeders breed misery in puppy mills, backyards and basements.

Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized with your tax dollars. Talk about spending money we don't have because there isn't enough space in municipal shelters to house all the homeless adoptable animals.

10. I agree. In my county, we put down over 100 animals a week during the

breeding season. Most of these are a result of the owners' failure to spay/neuter, but there was no low-cost spay/neuter option until last month, when our "Friends of the Animal Shelter" group signed on with a mobile clinic to come to our county once a month.

The biggest problem for us is backyard breeders of dogs--those who let their animals breed continuously. Sometimes they bring whole litters in when they aren't able to sell them. These are not family pets, even though they usually have names. They are not puppy mills, either, in the traditional sense. Puppy mill dogs usually go to pet stores. I can't tell you how many litters of puppies the County has euthanized this year. We have a hard time getting rescue groups to take whole litters, and the ones that are brought in are usually too young to be away from mama. Most of the folks in the rescue community believe that breeding should be licensed by the county, and I tend to agree. Why should the county have to pay for an owner's irresponsibility?

Don't even get me started on cats.

11. Backyard breeders are why Los Angeles has so many

Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas in the shelter. It is illegal and yet the increase in euthenasia in the city shelters are up over 10% in the past year and the numbers keep increasing instead of decreasing. I don't think there is any way of enforcing the law...
