Very controlled methodology, images that are categorized as relatively neutral and relatively disturbing are displayed to the participant, and biological responses are recorded. Response to the "disturbing" ones is very distinct from the neutral ones, and begins, in a statistically significant number of responses, before the image is displayed. That is, the reaction to the disturbing image happens before the person sees the image.
