after postponing it until the last possible hours, I bit the bullet and pulled Algiers' winter blanket off for a grooming and close inspection of his condition.
Sadly, it is very clear that the injury is to his stifle joint (the "knee" below the hip). It is in a pushed out position, either dislocated or fractured or maybe just no longer properly connected. At this point, it seems unlikely that he will even regain pasture soundness, although I won't know that for sure until I have him examined, either during April break or in June after school ends (depending in part on weather conditions, etc.) But it looks right now that his best possible future will be hopefully a couple months enjoying just being a horse at pasture before I have to put him down.
In the meantime, his condition has declined more than I had anticipated (I was trying to keep it decent without him carrying any extra or running around his stall too much so nothing could heal) so I'm beefing up his diet. It's hard because if I give him too much grain, he puts on more energy than weight. I'm going to try to swing by a feed store that I pass on my way to the hospital tomorrow morning to get him alfalfa cubes -- those put on weight as well as grain, but not nearly as much energy, so may do the trick for him.

I so hope that things are better than they currently look. (This or something better for the highest good of all involved.)
Much love and light to you, Algiers and the rest of your furry family.
