A great home remedy for burn care I wanted to share. |
|
That's minor burn care, and yes, I did have my recent burn looked at by a physician.
Last weekend, I burned my thumb on a baking sheet while taking it out of the oven. The woman I live with recommended soaking it in vinegar to minimize blistering. So I poured a little bit of apple vinegar over a cup full of ice and kept my thumb there on an off for an hour.
I didn't expect it to do a damn thing, but I swear to God it's almost five days later and there hasn't been even a hint of a blister no blister. True, I also rubbed both olive oil and aloe onto my thumb that night, which may also have helped, but this is what I usually do after a burn and I always blister anyway.
I have no idea how vinegar on a burn would prevent blistering, but I thought I'd pass along this tip anyway. (The vinegar also seemed to have a mild analgesic quality to it, if anyone cares to know this.)

1. I use lavender oil on minor burns. |
|
No ice required. It works immediately and no blistering. In fact, I used lavender oil yesterday when I spilled boiling water on my hand while removing it from the microwave. http://everything-lavender.com/using-lavender-oil-to-heal-burns.html

2. My grandma used to put vinegar on sunburns |
|
She would keep a bottle in the fridge at the beach house, and when we got burnt she would soak a towel in the cold vinegar and put it on the sunburn, and we'd hardly ever blister.

I keep an aloe plant in the kitchen. When I have a minor burn, I run it under cold water for a few seconds and then put the raw end of a fresh-cut aloe "leaf" right on it for a minute or two. No blisters with that, either.

5. wow vinegar has so many uses |
|
Half vinegar, half water--my hair rinse after shampooing for the first twenty years of my life
Half vinegar, half alcohol- great for swimmers ear treatment and prevention!
Dr. Jarvis of Vermont recommended that everyone with northern European ancestry drink a tablespoon of vinegar in water every morning for pH reasons, and plenty of people still do it.
Plus if you want to make your own cleaning products, vinegar is in most of them.
You know, I think I have heard of people putting vinegar in a spray bottle for sunburn. I do find that ice and aloe work great.

Or does it matter. I always have apple cider and balsalmic vinegar on hand for salad making.

I would use distilled white vinegar for the ear mix, and for window cleaner. I would use some type of red vinegar for the hair, though probably white would do there. Now for those that drink vinegar for pH reasons, I think they use organic Bragg's vinegar, with the "mother". Not sure about the sunburn.........................
This kind of discussion makes me feel a bit old. I think everyone used vinegar and water for a sort of conditioner when I was growing up!

I see the Braggs at the Co-op, I will buy some. Balancing my Ph probably wouldn't hurt me any. I've heard a number of people discuss taking some vinegar every day.

I use white vinegar to rinse. I don't do it every time. It makes hair VERY soft. And it brightens up my white hair that tends to yellow over time. I'm also using it for all around cleaner. I have the Bragg book. The possibilities are endless. http://www.versatilevinegar.org/usesandtips.html#4
