Can I plant my vegetable in soil that has just been rained on? |
|
The weather is certainly warm enough, but I thought I read somewhere that one should not plant in wet soil. I just got my plants, and am DYING to plant them!

1. Digging and walking on wet soil tends to compact it, |
|
so if it were me, I would probably wait a few days.

I think I recall that it also spreads bacteria from other parts of the yard that can be unhealthy for plants. But, of course, with this danged old hippy's disease, I could be just making that up.
We're dying to start planting here, too, but after the rain we had all day Sunday, it's still so muddy.

4. It will compact clay heavy soils. |
|
I wanted to plant so badly today too. But my soil is very clay heavy, so I had to force myself to wait. If the soil is more "crumbly" tomorrow instead of hard wet balls, then I'll plant tomorrow.
Instead I weeded my foundation beds. It was SO satisfying to pull up huge dandelion weeds with entire roots intact! I love weeding after it rains.
