Because we are going out of town for almost two months in about two weeks, I decided to take a gamble and put my tomatoes and peppers in well before our last average frost date. A neighbor is from New England and he had tomatoes, squash, etc LONG before anyone else b/c he put things in so much earlier than the "recommended" date last year. Not sure how he became an early-bird in an even colder climate but hey, the results spoke for themselves.
He's promised to keep an eye on my garden (containers) and help my house sitter cover everything if the dreaded frost comes after we leave. He even gifted me some squash transplants that went in almost two weeks ago, so it will be interesting to see if planting them super-early defeats my #1 hated nemesis squash vine borer this season.
I'm feeling so reckless that I even transplanted the water-rooted basil starts I got going from an organic bunch I bought last month.
I've put in moonflowers and morning glories too. Wheee-heeee! Frost, who'd afraid of frost??? Not me!!! ;)

| 1. Oh, now you've done it. |

It's like putting the boots and mittens away in the spring, which generally results in a blizzard within a week.

| 2. Yup. It's going to be 35 degrees here tomorrow night... |
|
BUT it's supposed to be raining all night too, so I'm hoping that (and some blankets) will save my poor plants from the hubris of their insane gardener. ;)

| 4. Frost in the Alleghany Highlands tonight, temps in the 30's. |

It figures. I just put the winter clothes away, gave the dogs their summer cuts, and planted flowers and bulbs this past week. My friend is right, never plant until after Mother's Day if you live in the mountains of Va.
Looks like I'll be bringing in the potted plants, mulching the bulbs in the ground, and knitting sweaters for the dogs today! LOL!
