Last summer I planted 4 blueberry bushes in a hugelkultur planting. This is a mound of buried wood - as ut rots it acts like a big nutrient releasing sponge. So far so good, last weekend I added a few bags of pine bark mulch and droed manure to the mound and heavily seeded with clover. I'm aiming for a living mulch to crowd out weeds, this is all on my mother-in-law's property and my opportunities to maintain it are few...
