but I'm about to. Should I soak them the night before I plant them? Nick them with a file, like I do for morning glories? Or just pop them in the ground as is?

Covered the holes with soil, then I watered them profusely. I have had good germination with that method for two seasons.
The "long story" is that I put down a plastic mulch film then put up a plastic fence, ~3feet high,. I poked holes through the film and earth with a pointy stick. I had to enlarge some of the holes to get the seedlings to find the holes because the film moved around.
I actually made a chain of holes with cuts between them: 0--0 0--0 0--0 0--0 0--0

Most shelling peas (the kind I grow) are pretty reliable germinators. Dunno about the edible-pod types, though.
