| In what order do I treat my lawn? |
|
I realize I have all this stuff to put on my lawn, but I don't know what I should do first and how long I should wait in between different treatments. I have three treatments: 1) weed and feed granules 2) fire-ant granules (for the entire lawn) and 3) flea spray.
I already have the weeds and the fire ants :) and I expect the fleas any day!
(I should probably mention that I have a kiddo and two cats who all like to go outdoors)
Suggestions?
Thanks :hi:

| 3. It might be just a tad early |

for feeding your lawn but maybe too late for weeding it. The weeding treatment should be done Februaryish, ergo you wouldn't already have the weeds. The grass needs to get a good start first so they will have use for the fertilizer, so late April (I'm basing this on where we are, way south in Mississippi.) Weeding and feeding should be two different actions. I'm not familiar with flea spray. Would it not be best to treat the Cats and the youngin?
We have used the Over and Out Fire Ant treatment and it works very well. Actually I don't think it kills ants it just keeps them out of the area you don't want them.
Ain't spring time yard prep just grand?

| 4. Ahh! But you're assuming I actually have grass. |
|
I must admit, I've never paid much attention to my yard before (that was the ex's territory), but now that I am, I'm finding that my yard is mostly weeds. I can't afford to replace it all with new grass, so I thought perhaps if I started killing weeds and feeding the grass that is there, maybe one day I'd have more grass than weeds.
I use the Over and Out stuff too. It seems to work well. Last year, I started using the flea spray. My new neighbor has three little flea-ridden dogs, so even though I do treat the cats, I don't want the fleas in the yard.

| 5. I live in Dist. 22, too. We've already weeded and feeded by spreading |
|
the granules just before a good rain, like today (here). We use the red ant powder; when we see a mound, we treat it. No fleas here, so can't help you there. Good luck!

| 6. I found an organic fertilizer |
|
"Organic Choice Lawn Food" by Scotts. Can be used anytime whether it rains or not. and comparatively inexpensive. Has a slight manure smell to it and is mostly nitrogen. If you have a large yard its worth using something like Over and Out for combatting the fire ants. In the long run its cheaper then fighting the mounds. We've used it the past two years and it works very well. I use a hoe and back muscles to fight the weeds; but a healthy lawn is the best way to fight weeds.

This weekend I'm hoping for decent weather so I can get out and finish my lawn projects. I have to treat for ants first because they've built a home right where I want to build a flower bed. BTW: I also use the Over and Out mentioned here, and it works great. One application chases off all the ants and seems to work all season.
Once I finish that, I'm hoping to run back to the Enchanted Forest nursery and pick up a few more flowers. I'm almost done with my backyard, and realize my front yard looks pretty blah. I lost all my impatiens in the last freeze, so I just have mulch around my trees.
My neighbors planted hibiscus around their trees. It looks ridiculous. The hibiscus are getting huge! They also planted a row of pear trees along their sidewalk, and all those noisy Houston birds congregate their and poop all over the sidewalk. So everyday in the fall, they have to hose it down. I bet they regret those choices.

I'm almost done with my backyard, too, though need a few more perennials. I'm about to tackle the front today; lots of weeding, and I have 48 white caladium bulbs I'm going to be attempting in a few really shady spots. Some thoughtfulness prior to planting trees goes a long way; I know, as I've made several boo-boos myself. There's always the stump grinder guy who you can hire by the hour. Did you hear it's supposed to get down in the high 30s Sunday? :wow: Isn't that unheard of for April? I'll take it, knowing what's coming! Happy planting! :hi:

Ohmigosh! That IS unheard of, but I agree. Soon, it'll be 100+ degrees, so you won't hear me complaining of a little cold weather.

| 10. Okay, I had to turn my heat on! |
|
I was gone most of the day (I had to wear a coat) and when I got home, it is was 64 degrees in my house. The poor cats wanted to go out so badly, so I let them out and 5 minutes later they were begging to come back in. Oh well, so much for any gardening this weekend.
Stay warm :)
