In my previous "newbie" thread, someone explained to me that potatoes are treaated so they don't sprout nowadays, so to grow potatoes, you have to start with "seed potatoes," not just any potato from the grocer. Well, the garden centers I have been to lately have not carried many if any veggie plants other than the typical tomatoes, peppers, etc. I was curious, rather than ordering seed potatoes, do you think organics from a place like Whole Foods would have been treated too not sprout as well, or might they be good too use for planting?
I can order some if not, but I hate ordering things from multiple places, and so far, the places I have wanted to buy other things from did nnot carry potatoes, and the places that carry potatoes haven't had anything else in which I am interested.
Any input is appreciated!
I have my 4x4 bed built, and my seedlings ready to go. I just ran out of time. So I should be able to plant them one evening this week after work. I have a few varieties of tomatoes, plus jalapenos, and bell peppers for now, and plan to start some seeds this week too, so those will be ready to plant later on.

Here is a link from Mother Earth News: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/2007-04-01/When-and-How-to-Plant-Potatoes.aspxI think that you would be fine using organic potatoes. Just make sure the "eyes" are developing sprouts.

| 2. I used some organic potatos from WholeFoods last year in my first "bucket potato" experiment. |
|
They grew into strong plants, and those plants made new potatos.
So, I can tell you from experience that they work.

Never planted taters before so gonna have to do a little research. I just went looking for my All New Square Gardening book and can't find it! We've been moving things in and out and around the house lately and I just can't put my hands on it.
What does it say about potatoes?
Yaaaa! I just located my book! Whew!

About an hour before your post, I was cursing myself for not knowing where I left my Square Foot book!!! I wanted to glance over a couple sections right before planting, but couldn't find it. After I finished, I looked all over the house and found it (right where I left it) on the kicthen counter... I had piled mail on top of it, so I must have walked right past it a hundred times in the last week!

I did the very same thing. For weeks I've known where it was and then when I went to get it, I picked up the Jeavons book and went, "That's not it!" Then searched the house and went back to the stack where I picked up the other one and there it was. It had slid behind the pile so I couldn't see it well.
We picked up our vermiculite today and we took tomorrow off so lots of work ahead for the weekend. Filling boxes and starting seeds indoors and out.
I can hardly wait to get started so I need to get the inside housework done tonight!
:woohoo:
