| I'm growing my first legal garden ever |
|
I have a new back porch with full sun on one side. I am going to start with container stuff. So far I have like 100 little peat thingys with seeds, mostly flowers and spices.
What is the survival rate of them overall? Will I end up with 100 plants?
Be prepared for multiple newbie questions along the way :D

Some of the seeds were insanly tiny. I think it was the oregano that was the worst. I just licked my finger and dabbed the dirt :P
I fear I'll have 5 in each "thingy."

| 4. My sprout rate so far has been about 40% of the peat disks. |
|
I put 3-4 seeds in each disk. I used about 50 of the disks, and I have 19 little sprouts. A few took off like GANGBUSTERS and I planted them tonight because their roots were already escaping the disk and real leaves flourishing (beans, peas, and corn). Most are still itty bitty sprouts with cotyledons (I am SO impressed with myself that I remember that from High School bio!LOL). I went ahead and planted more of the ones that had not sprouted yet in some of the unused disks. If those don't sprout, I'll know I got a bad batch of seeds.
I'm a newbie myself, so I've been asking lots of questions too!

| 5. I put my seeds right into the garden soil, and not in containers. |
|
Is that why nothing is happening???
Actually I have 3 carrots that have sprouted, but my bunching onions haven't done a thing. I planted about 1 month ago :(
I just planted lettuce and green beans yesterday.
Getting impatient.
(Newbie here too :dunce: )

| 9. I just planted the green beans - and I picked up a cheap beach umbrella |
|
that filters out the afternoon sun.
I've been watering everyday with a fan sprayer. I noticed today that the under layer of soil wasn't getting wet where I planted the bunching onions. :( I'll start watering that section more heavily - but if nothing comes up, I won't be surprised.
Thanks for the hugs - I'm going to need lots of them! I do have one baby bell pepper growing. It's my pride and joy.

| 17. I have to admit.. it's fun just doing it |
|
If 2 or 3 poke out of the dirt I'll be happy.
This is coming from a guy who thought he killed an African Violet because the flowers fell off. Funny thing.. about 6 months later more flowers popped up. I guess it is just what they do. :D

How far down do the roots go in your average flower?
