Foolproof Way to Start Seeds

I've done dozens and dozens of bags of seeds this way. Take a baggie, cut little slits for drainage on the bottom, fill with sterilized seed mixture, sprinkle seeds, add a little more soil, and there you are: a little hothouse. As you can see from the pics below, I've put mine in the sunlight. It's so easy and the investment so minor that you can even plant older seeds and avoid the sprouting tests.

I've done all kinds of seeds--from impatiens to castor bean to zucchini.

As far as planting goes, you can separate each seedling and transplant if you want or you can simply take little one-inch "plugs" and put them in the ground.





The beauty of this method is that it eliminates a lot of the watering, something you can't afford to mess up with on seedlings.

4. I guess this is going to sound like a dumb question, but I'm quite a novice gardner.

Do you leave the baggie top open as wide as possible, just a little, or do you close it during the sprouting process?

I love your idea BTW. It sure saves $$ on having to buy seeding trays and making a mess when filling them, watering etc., but you can keep them almost anywhere.

6. How much water do you put in

when you fill the bags?
I just started 14 bags using your method and can't wait to see what happens.

Also, do you keep yours indoors or outside?
