| Help!!! How do I get rid of large Burford holly bushes? My neighbor |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 06:13 PM by japple
/cousin is coming tomorrow to start building a large porch on the front of my house. There are 3 HUGH!!! holly bushes growing about 4 feet from the house that will have to be removed. We had planned to just chainsaw them to ground level and build the porch over that, but my SIL and someone else told me that if we didn't eradicate the entire bush, the stumps would continue to grow and come up through the porch. She said we need to have the stumps pulled out and then pour a lot of rock salt in the holes.
I need help, and I need it fast. I googled "how to get rid of holly bushes" and didn't get much information.

| 1. When we got rid of a bunch of overgrown shrubs in front of the house, |

someone suggested just tying the stumps to a truck and pulling them out that way. But be careful if you go that route. If the shrubs are too close to the house, you can actually destabilize the foundation. What we ended up doing is digging them out by hand, which took ages. But the house didn't fall down, so that was good.

| 2. Like Wild said, you can tie them to a truck and pull them out--- |
|
But if you do punch some holes in the earth around them and water them in to loosen the roots and use a no-stretch rope/chain. When the rope stretches and the shrub turns loose all hell breaks loose and you'll lose the rear window or damage the back of the truck.
Next option is to cut them to the ground with the chain saw and drill holes into the stump. Fill the holes with a Glysophate based weed killer. Then you can build the deck with confidence.
Been there and done that.
