The articles are rather brief. The picture looks exactly like sprouting potatoes. This was my first year to grow them, too. Mine were a bit darker green, though. http://www21.sbs.com.au/vasilisgarden/index.php?pid=howto&active_anchor=1002

| 3. Raven, I'm curious, where are you that potatoes are just coming up now? |
|
I'm in a pretty cool place (2,000 feet and a few miles below the Mason Dixon line) and we're already digging ours (planted early March).
The foliage for potatoes is lush, thick, and deep green. The blooms, when they appear, are usually small and light purple, sometimes (depending on variety) have a little yellow center. Blooms are sparse and don't last long.

| 5. Warm the soil by putting sheets of black plastic on it for several weeks before planting |
|
...next year (!). Warm soil makes a difference. We planted our potatos on Memorial Day and they were slow to sprout. Sprouting seemed to take forever. I am in Ohio and our potato plants are knee high and two plants are starting to flower. Yum yum

| 6. I planted 4 different kinds and the leaves of each vary a bit. |
|
Russets look more yellow/green and long, reds are rounder, blues have blue veins, yellow fingerlings are more chunky looking and dark green. I didn't expect the foliage to differ so much, but it makes it handy to be able to harvest the fingerlings early.
