I don't much care for pure action games or vanilla shooters. I prefer strategy, RPG and adventure (e.g. Grand Theft Auto) type games.
Thanks!

1. For action go X-box, for RPG's go PS2

Although both consoles have a lot of good games.

3. rent system and games, play around and test.

i'm sure you also have friends who have one or both of these systems. play around with their game collection. find which one suits your style more. catalog in your head the 'must-have games' (for YOUR personal tastes) you'd have for each system; once you hit 5+ personal 'must-have games' then go buy that system.
i myself have not achieved the 5+ personal 'must-have games' to justify either a GC, Xbox, or PS2 purchase at the moment. some are close, some hitting around 3 or 4, but not yet 5 or more...

For RPG & adventure fans, the X-Box is nothing more than a really freakin' huge and expensive doorstop.

Better frame rates, better load times, better draw distances, better online service. Same price as the tech inferior PS2.
Of course I'm biased since I opted for an Xbox over PS2. Plus you can get all the GTA games on Xbox now anyway. Not to mention Doom3 will be Xbox exclusive for consoles and of course Halo-2.

6. I prefer the PS2 myself

People whine about frame rates, but I've only noticed slowdowns here and there, and rarely at that - only once or twice has it interfered with game play.

they play DVD's reasonably well, get the new thin one, they upgraded the processor and DVD components, you can get RPG's galore for it (including being able to play the PS-1 RPG's) on edit The x-box has a dvd function, but you have to buy a seperate $30 remote and thingie you plug into the controller to make it work
