I try playing Shogun every now and then.
I just can't get the battlefield controls down. I'm very good at standard RTS games, but this is wildly different.
And if I let the computer handle combat, I've just got a boring version of Civilisation.
I want to like this game, I really, really do. Any tips?

good amount of AoE II. I love setting up 8 player battles between me and the CPU. The Japanese and the Teutons are my favorite civilizations.

I loved Medieval Total War, but when i bought Rome recently, I found it was a bit too new for my 3 year old PC. It installed fine, but was a bit 'jumpy' when I got into the game itself. Unfortunately, you can't return software after it's been opened...
We'll probably get a new PC after Christmas, and I should be fine after that. I just have to be patient.
I used to play MTW for hours. I won at least once as each faction and several times as the English & the Turks, my two favorite factions. However, in the end, it got to be too easy. I would even mod the other factions so I would have more of a challenge and I still ended up winning.

I still play a mean Steel Panthers, can beat the AI with impunity. I also like A Century of Warfare (ACOW) not done much on the internet.
Am working on the learning curve for Total War Medieval, so I would be easy to beat. I do not have a 64 bit video card so I figure Rome would not work on my 2 year old laptop.
I also play with spread sheets using Trevor DuPuys HERO model.

I have, and I also have Shogun and Medieval, and the Viking expansion.
I played for a few days, took Carthage as my faction. I control all of Sicily, I have conqured all except 2 provinces of Spain, and also control what once belonged to Nubia, with the exception of the Nubian capital.
I decided to take a break and am now playing Dawn of War.
