What am I doing wrong in Doom3? (spoilers)

I've got a adequate computer and video card. I've played lots of similar games (eg. HL2 all the way to the last scene, counterstrike). I've got it set on the easist level.

As soon as the ghost/zombies appear I get about 10 feet down the first hallway and I'm toast. They seem to be invincible.

What am I doing wrong?

1. switch from flashlight to handgun

the handgun takes a whole clip to kill a zombie unless you use headshots

2. are you using a mouse?

are you "strafing"?
