Solo Fantasy PC Games Recommendations

Hey everyone I was wondering if you can recommend some decent fantasy pc games that resemble dungeon and dragons. Oh my connection is too slow for online play. Gracious Danny.

1. Recently Dungeon Siege 2 was a lot of fun.

Yes, it's a Diablo clone, but it's still very good.

Also, Morrowind, which is an older game, will suck hours out of your life. It's a completely immersive and non-linear experience. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Older games like Baldur's Gate and it's sequels are fun, too - and you can get them for cheap.

12. Haven't tried DS2 but I bought DS1 and was extremely dissapointed...

There were a lot of people who liked it but I was expecting something else, I guess -- a beautiful fantasy RPG with a great story. And "story" is not really a key part of DS1... I don't think DS2 is much different.

The story is so-so.

You are correct in your assessment, but that's the attraction for me. I play so many where the story is intricate and developed....and I love those type of games. However, every now and then I want a change of pace. It was a fun hack-n-slash with great gameplay, that you can sit and play for hours....a bunch of almost mindless fun.

Without a doubt one of the best RPG's of all time.

Also, if you want something a little lighter/less intensive, Sacred is fun. You should be able to find the demo to check it out.

6. Neverwinter Nights and expansions.

Get the Platinum collection.

Oh, and don't forget the community mods.
Many recreate the old paper and pencil D&D/AD&D modules as well as some fantastic completely original stuff.

8. I second that.

If you want D&D on the computer, Neverwinter Nights is the way to go.
Many of the user created mods are quite small (that was intentional).
On Edit: The Platinum Edition of NWN has over 80 hours of gameplay, so you won't be bored.

9. Diablo 2 can be played offline.

While most people play it online, it's just fine for a solo offline game.

It's older, so it's cheaper now, too.

10. A few recomendations

1) Temple of Elemental Evil. Though you have to download the patch for it so that it doesn't crash occasionally. It uses D&D 3.0 rules the best I've ever seen them implemented as accurately as possible to the books. It takes the original old 1st edition Temple of Elemental Evil adventure and accurately recreates Hommlet, and the dungeon. Great pure Dungeons and Dragons dungeon crawl. Patch is a must though. It's only 9.99 now on Amazon.com. Some people really didn't like it, thought that it was too buggy (it was, you need the patch from online) and that the 3.5 system doesn't translate well to the game. I think it's a great simple dungeon crawl, and totally worth it. I mention it first because you mention games resembling dungeons and dragons

2) Morrowind. I don't know what more there is that can be said about this game. If you get it and it's two expansions, it can give you maybe thousands of hours of entertainment, then there are tons of mods on top of it. Oblivion, it's successor comes out soon and take the crown, but this imho is the best solo crpg ever published.

3) Neverwinter Nights. More D&D, but streamlined rules as compared to the literal ToEE translation. Still fun, but get the Platinum edition so you have as much there to play with initially as possible, but there are a ton of online mods you can download for free with more adventures.

Of these I would probably recomend someone play Morrowind first, Temple of Elemental Evil second (as long as they get the patches) and Neverwinter Nights third. That's just my preference though.

11. Guild Wars

Guild Wars is designed from the bottom up as an online RPG that's a) free once you buy the game itself and b) made for slow connections- including 56K. The developers claim you can play anywhere, worldwide, on a 56K connection and not have lag issues. Having played for a while now, I've never noticed lag from other players on slow connections. I'm on broadband, but have played with people on 56K, and they don't seem to lag at all.

Guild Wars is a lot of fun and there's not much of a learning curve; there's always lots and lots of people playing. If you get it, I'm Wizard Merritt.

(edit) Peoplewere talking about Morrowind upthread; get it, get it, get it. Morrowind is awesome; if you have a decent machine, the next in the series, Oblivion, is coming out this fall/winter. Oblivion looks great- it uses VALVe's Source engine- and it's likely to be even bigger.

I'd strongly suggest you get the Morrowind strategy guide if you get that game; Morrowind is huge and there's no way you'll ever see everything the game has to offer without it.

13. If you enjoy a great story and setting...

... check out "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura." The graphics aren' great (they seemed dated even when the game was released) but that is it's only shortcoming, IMHO.

I wasn't sure how I would take the whole 'fantasy world dealing with its own industrial revolution' setting but it really was amazing and very interesting -- there is a huge conflict between 'magick' and 'technology' in this world. And don't worry, there's plenty of deep Dwarven mines to explore and a great big Elf city in the trees. ;)

The game is very open-ended... you follow along a general storyline but there are countless ways of getting to the end (or endings, as you'll get a different update on some of the places you visit at the end of the game depending on how you spent your time at those locales). You can play a second go with several different NPC party members too.
