I didn't get '06 but I'm getting this one soon.I've been playing sine OOTP2 and find it way more fun than the arcade baseball games (not that those suck, mind you).I'd highly recommend it to any baseball fan, casual or hardcore. It's a great game.

| 2. 06 was kind of a trainwreck, IMO |

But I think fans were expecting way too much when it was basically a re-write of the entire code.
This version is much smoother. The interface is 150% better.

It seems like a whole new game. The interface is clunky as hell (just like their NHL Manager) and importing stadium pics and things is a much bigger pain in the ass.I'm afraid to know what 6 was like.
However, the game still retains that same addictiveness.I actually like to manage individual games, and I love having the new "pitch-by-pitch" option.I always hated using the steal feature before because you had no real control on what point in the count that your runner would go.This solves that very nicely.
All in all,now that I'm getting used to the new look and features,I have to say it's still the best baseball game going. Not as user friendly as earlier versions, but like you said it's new code,so hopefully they'll smooth out the rough areas in future releases.
