Wii Wecommendations?

So my wife got our son a Wii for his upcoming 10th birthday. Anyone have recommendations on good games?

Spore is definitely at the top of the list of upcoming games. Mario Kart Wii looks like a must-have as well. Wii Fit is also on the 'to-get' list.

What else worthwhile is out there? This is the first 'console' system I've ever had - I'm a PC gamer at heart - so 'platform' games don't do much for me. Yeah, I'm asking about games for me. He can find his own damn games. :evilgrin: But it would be cool to find something we could both play that wouldn't bore me to tears or drive me insane.

2. Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda are great.

I know you said you don't like platformers but Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario are both very good, and Paper Mario is just as much a RPG and puzzle game as it is a platformer. The Godfather is a lot of fun too, the controls are very innovative although it is quite violent if that bothers you.

The guy at my mom & pop software store recommended Paper Mario as well. I might have to get past my platformer prejudice and give it a try. Can you play it in a co-op mode?

I got Mario Kart - I think I'm addicted. :silly: My wife and kid are out of the country, and when they get back, I hope they don't look at the the daily logs of how much I've played it so far! :hide:

10. Paper Mario is single player only, but still a great game.

A lot of people say that Super Smash Brothers Brawl is great as well, although I have yet to play it.

Wii is compatible with Gamecube games if you have a controller and memory card though, so here are some more you should check out: Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4 (which actually has a Wii version now as well which is supposed to be excellent), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Metroid Prime, and Tales of Symphonia.

4. Gamer dad and 2 sons, aged 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 recommend ...

Elebits--great non-violent FPS
Warioware: Smoothmoves--a lot of fun to play together
Rayman Raving Rabids--another good party game, but just as fun to play solo as well
Super Paper Mario--good puzzles and fun visuals
Cars--Definitely a kid's game, but think of it as a non-violent version of GTA

I always rent the games at Blockbuster before I buy them ... though the rentals can be a bit pricey, it's better than making a $50 mistake!

A couple of other tips with regard to the Wii ...

It does have parental controls, which may be important to you. I don't use them myself, since my boys can't reach the Wii where I've put it, but IIRC you can control which games they can load based on rating, which is good because there are some titles you probably don't want your 10 year old to play. One caveat, though--I don't believe the parental controls work with GameCube titles, so you still need to keep an eye out for his friends bringing over their copy of 'Resident Evil.'

There's also a nice little feature that generates a system message (similar to an e-mail) that tells you what's been played and for how long each day. Again, a nice little tool for keeping an eye on things. (Of course, you might want to delete it after *your* all-night sessions, lest your wife find out. ;) )

I've already set up parental controls, although their method displays the lock code when you enter it. :eyes:

I didn't know that you could delete the game-time logs; I might want to do that before they get back. It's a little hard justifying my "computer game time" rules when I played for over 5 hours straight yesterday after work. :blush:

18. Rayman Raving Rabbids - great stuff!

The Grandparents got him the 1st Rayman game for the Wii used - we had a blast with it. We just got the sequel yesterday, the band games are a blast!

I'm really looking forward to the next one in the series, TV Party. The first game that you play with your butt! :rofl: (Wii Balance board required)

20. We just got Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

So far my son has played about 30 minutes or so, and is loving it. The motion sensitive controls for light saber battles and force powers seem to be pretty cool.

21. Rock Band 2 rocks!

Just got this a couple days ago. I've played less then 2 hours so far, but it's a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

And my wife, who in the past 9 years has never shown any interest in computer gaming, is in the band with my son and I. Sweet!

22. "World of Goo" is great!

And at $15 download from the Wii Shopping channel it's a bargain as well. Totally unlike anything else I've ever played.
