Of course they have premium and VIP accounts you can pay for as well as micro transactions but you can get started and still do a lot while never even giving them a CC#.

1. I played LOTRO from Beta through launch and ~1 year after.

It's a really well designed game that focuses heavily upon gathering a small group of friends and doing everything together. I strongly recommend giving it a trial run--and if you play on the Gladden server, send me a PM so I can log in and help out (if I ever find any free time :( bah, work).

Caveat: I haven't played the free version, but the original game was great.
