I explained what a 'pimp' is to a 19 year old guy at work the other day.

He was homeschooled, and some of the the other people his age were teasing him at work about being a 'pimp' because they knew he didn't know what it meant, I guess. Finally, he asked me what that word meant, and the general manager of the store was right behind us on the stairs. I gulped, and then said, "It has a lot to do with Prostitution. And it's not a good thing." We had a longer talk about it in private a few minutes later, but it was just the oddest thing that I've experienced in a while. There are a lot of things like that, which I take for granted that he is just oblivious to, it seems. Is that common among Homeschooled adults?

I doubt there's that much public school literature that covers pimps and prostitution. Most likely, those who learn about these matters in school hear about them from their peers, who rarely know what they're talking about and thus serve merely to misinform their friends. And the ratio of parents of public schoolchildren who neglect their childrens' sex ed to parents of homeschoolers who are similarly ignorant is probably the same.

I've always been very open with my children about discussing sexuality, and making sure they understand various terminology that they run across via TV, relatives, &/or friends. When they ask about something, I'm always ready to answer without embarrassment; though I'll sometimes delay the answer until we aren't in a public setting.

What a shame that this young man's parents were so neglectful! I guess it's because their parents never talked with them about sex.
