FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26 2004 IS BUY NOTHING DAY


For 24 hours, millions of people around the world do not participate -- in the doomsday economy, the marketing mind-games, and the frantic consumer-binge that's become our culture. We pause. We make a small choice not to shop. We shrink our footprint and gain some calm. Together we say to Exxon, Nike, Coke and the rest: enough is enough. And we help build this movement to rethink our unsustainable course.

Who'd want to go near the stores when they're so insane?

Of course, I'm trying to make as many days as possible "buy nothing days." Almost made it today but I would have been pushing a car if I didn't buy gas.

9. It's not just the stores for me.......

it's the traffic. They are all quite insane and suicidal when they get behind the wheel. From now till early January I'm only leaving the house on a "need to go" basis.

away from malls during Xmas season. I buy off the internet. Easier and not hassles. This year though will not be a big spending spree. I've had enough.

13. I failed for the first time in years, but I hope you'll forgive me

DD has been in FL too long. She didn't bring something warm enough for GD to wear when we go see the Nutcracker, so we headed over to Goodwill so she could look for some tights to go with her holiday dress (GD WON'T wear anything else), which she found. A nice heavy pair. While we were there I saw a copy of Your Money or Your Life and got it for her. 29 cents. Please don't hurt me.

Anyone know about Goodwill?

14. I don't think buying at Goodwill

really counts; after all, it's going to charity, not to a mega corp. Plus the item was already purchased once before-you aren't adding to the toll on the environment.

15. I really didn't wind up feeling too guilty, under the circumstances

In fact I was a tad smug about finding the book for DD. I love Goodwill. As far as I know they are all good, unlike SA.

17. no shopping, no selling

I stayed in the house and had a shopping free day. Didn't even get coffee from my favorite shop. My husband and I are thinking about making every Friday "buy nothing day." It made us much more aware of what we blow on stupid things that we didn't even realize we were spending on.

"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - news), the world's largest retailer, slashed its own expectations of November sales on Saturday, saying customer traffic declined toward the end of Thanksgiving Day week, which signals the start of the holiday shopping season.

On a recording detailing sales through Friday, Wal-Mart said it expects a 0.7 percent increase in November sales at its U.S. stores open at least one year, down sharply from a forecast of 2 percent to 4 percent a week ago.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company said "sales fell below plan the past week, which impacted the results of our November forecast." The forecast covers the four-week period of Oct. 30 to Nov. 26 and includes Black Friday.

The moniker refers to the day after Thanksgiving Day, as it once marked the day money-losing retailers go out of the red and into the black, or profit."

18. Took a tour of our local Mall's parking lot. Lots of empty spaces.

That is not a good sign. Normally during the holiday season people are parking on the grass. Last year there was lots of empty spaces too.
