Working Assets

Sorry, I know that this company has been mentioned in different posts, but can someone tell me more about Working Assets? I've gotten a few ads for them in the mail, and can't quite believe they could be for real....

Also, any rural people use their phone service? I live in a rural setting, and am unsure they could really provide good service for me.

by the way: after reading everyone's posts, I have really started to think about my lifestyle so much more! We don't have recycling services anywhere close (well, about 50 miles away), so I never think about that kind of thing; however, I did go out of my way to recycle my used cell phone, and it felt great! Also, my mom and dad cleaned closets the other day, and we usually toss old stuff (once again, we don't have any recycling/goodwill centers close at all), but I said "Don't do that!" and packed them up and took them to the goodwill in the closest city. It was a lot more work, but again felt great! It's addictive! I definitely felt an "afterglow" for a few days afterwards. I'm looking into planting a "wildlife habitat" in the back yard this spring. I found some information on the Wildlife Federation website that instructs how to build insect/bird/small mammal-friendly gardens and flowers. A bonus for the wildlife in our tiny town, and a bonus for my kitties, who will have more window-watching to do! Thanks everyone, for making me more aware of my planet!

so I'm not going to get it -- what's the point? but AFAIK, the rest of their stuff is for real!

and thanks for your effort to take stuff to the goodwill! :hug: it's more work being aware of what happens to your "stuff" but it really makes a difference! As far as trash, I am down to one small bag of trash per week. Unbelieveable what a difference it makes.

2. I use them.

I've been happy with them. The one and only time I've had any questionable activity on my bill, it was immediately and courteously taken care of.

I barely use long distance service, so my basic monthly fee amounts to $6 if I don't actually make any calls (I round up my bill to the nearest even number to donate a little extra). Each bill contains a list of good books which you can either order, or, if your budget is somewhat like mine, look up in the library. There's also the possibility of sending activist letters/faxes for a small fee, but you can take that or leave it.

Once a year, you get to vote on how you'd like the profits distributed, to a variety of good progressive causes.

And a neat bonus: new subscribers get several month's worth of coupons for free Ben & Jerry's ice cream. :)

3. My experience with a long distance telemarketer

I used to get several calls every week from the major long distance carriers wanting me to switch to them. A few weeks ago when one called, I said to him, "If I switch carriers, I'll put my money where my values are and switch to Working Assets or someone like that." On the other end of the line was a sigh that I couldn't quite interpret but it seemed like either he's been heariing that a lot or he feels the same way or something like that. Anyway, I haven't had one telemarketing call for long distance since then. They all must trade info about who it's useless to call.

I still haven't gotten off my duff to make the switch though. (sigh)

4. I had a good experience with them....

but I live in a city, so I don't know how they'd work out for you. I don't think it would be much different from any more conventional long distance carriers, though (aside from their politics and philanthropy, of course!). The only reason I stopped using them is because I don't need long distance anymore.
