| What is the final word on Safeway? |
|
I have seen posts on DU with conflicting information that Safeway supports Repub. and Dem. parties. In both cases links have been provided. So what's the final word? Pub or Dem? I am willing to start boycotting Safeway. I buy all my groceries there. It's one of the few things I can do living in small town Canada. The other is cancelling my Time mag. subscription.

... and one I would like to know as well.
Like you I do all my grocery shopping at Safeway, but if they are supporting the repukes, then I am willing to drive a little further each shopping day, to get my groceries at a more friendly place.
I was also looking at working for them in the security area. Currently in Australia they are looking for staff to work in the area of loss prevention, and they do pay pretty well, but I won't work for them if they support repukes.

| 2. I'm Confused About This As Well, Let's Combine Sources? |
|
The Follow Your Money site lists Safeway as a company giving 90% to DEMS....but I don't know how reliable that is.
Plus it is complicated for corporations that large. They may directly support Dem candidates and then give to the grocery pac that supports GOP.
They are NOT listed on the the Kos Bush Boycott list in this category, grocery & specialty stores to boycott are:
Albertsons Bath and Body Works Bi-Lo CarMax Central Market the Finish Line Kids II Radio Shack Hair Cuttery Rent-A-Center SportsZone Vision Care Zale's Bruno's Food Lion H-E-B Stores Murry's Shaws Savon/Kroger Publix
It would seem from everything I've seen that if your choice is Kroger, Albertson's or Safeway, that Safeway is best.
The major anti-Safeway thing I've seen on another thread is that there are some "Bush Ranger" execs there; however I think with any huge corporation there will be some of those at the top trollin' for their tax break!
Here in LA I'm able to shop Costco, Whole Foods and the little indie stores and never set foot in a major chain; but if you live where there's a monopoly, what can you do?
I would say anything beats those big Walmart retail/grocery stores.
One thing you might do is see if there is a portion of things that you buy regularly that you can buy online and have delivered regularly. I've heard people say that they were surprised that having dog foot, water, diapers or whatever delivered once a month was actually cheaper than lugging it yourself! In that way you will cut down what you shop for in the major chains.

| 3. Hm -- don't see Meijer on the Kos list, either. |
|
We're fortunate to have three choices for most things -- Trader Joe's, Kroger and Meijer. If we could get everything we buy from TJ's, we'd do it, but we can't. We do buy all our poultry, all our alcohol (beer or wine), and most of our snack food from there, and many of our staples come from Meijer if we can't get them at TJ's. I know both Kroger and Meijer have the IFCWU in their grocery sections, but Kroger hasn't been especially friendly to them lately. Haven't heard anything about Meijer. Doesn't matter -- we try to buy as much at Trader Joe's as we possibly can, since we know they treat their employees well.
Wish we had a Costco within 35 miles -- wouldn't be any question where we'd buy things we can't get at TJ's, otherwise!

| 4. Can some one explain why Bi-lo is on this list? |
|
I really haven't been able to find any reason for this. One person cites Bi-lo as a red state company as their reason. (they aren't, they are currently dutch owned) :eyes: Hard core confederate types want to boycott them cause they booted Maurice Bessingers barbecue sauce. I can't find any donations red or blue for them or their parent company. Can someone please provide a link for the reason for Bi-los inclusion?
