1. I can see a drawback.

If your fans aren't on an unlimited text plan, it's a bit like you making a collect call to plug your gig.

I wouldn't do it without someone's permission, lest I piss them off.

2. But why would you text "12345 to BandName" (or anyone else, for that matter)

if you didn't WANT to be texted? You give permission by opting in. It's only a drawback if the band or vendor goes overboard with the texting.

I assumed that you collect your fans phone numbers and then this service shoots out texts to them.
