... have lots of politically-active UMWA members and retirees, too. I busted my thumb with a hammer, nailing one of the homemade plywood campaign signs that a UMWA local created for a statewide candidate in WV. Years later, AG McGraw hired me - and still remembered about the thumb.

With the Richard Trumka-autographed copy of United We Stand: the United Mine Workers of America, 1890-1990, by Maier B. Fox (signed when Trumka was still UMWA President), it's usually not hard to get up to the executive floor of the AFL-CIO.
I think the UMWA has it right; Edwards will not only represent the reality-based concerns of mining families, but will be able to connect with his progressive message in the all-important Upper Appalachian/border/swing states in which the UMWA's very active membership is concentrated.
