I read it but wasn't sure what to make of it.
Regardless, it probably won't do me much good, since my state, NE, has a caucus instead of a primary.
I thought I was doing the right thing by trying to move on. I guess not, huh? It would be wonderful if this went somewhere!

If you have a caucus, then that Resolution is PRECISELY for people like you.
Yes, change the words to fit your locale, print it up and take it to your caucus.
Talk it up, and try to get people to vote "YES" on it, so it will go to your county.
At the worst, at least it gets people a bit more educated, it gets them talking, and it puts them on notice that the Dems won't forget homeless people!
Thanks!

I didn't see it before and now it's archived. It won't let me reply or recommend. Anyway, I wanted to say that I heard a story on Marketplace not too long ago about a man involved in apartment complexes for low income people. He said that the cost of providing an apartment for a homeless person is $30,000 a year (I'm sure that includes utilities and maintenance and so on because my rent is only $6000 a year - maybe it even includes food or other things) and the cost of providing shelter in a homeless shelter, combined with the extra medical costs due to physical and mental stresses caused by being homeless and the court costs due to people being arrested for loitering or begging or just snapping from the horrible stress of having nowhere to live - all that adds up to $150,000 a year. In other words, it's five times more expensive to leave them out on the street than to give people a decent place to live. The thing that keeps this from happening is the start-up cost, according to the man.
I would think that there should be some philanthropists out there who could donate the costs to build low-income apartment complexes - or even just lend the money. Given a savings of $120,000 per year per person housed, it wouldn't take long to pay back the initial loans. Then each community would continue to save that money long term and it could be used for things like jobs programs, mentoring programs, libraries, grants to people at risk for homelessness to prevent them from becoming homeless and so on.
I will try to find a transcript of that show.

That this would be perfect to present to a city council meeting here.

8. I completely agree! And, lots of other places! |
|
You wouldn't believe how many people assume that I'm so dumb that I don't know about "shelters", and tell me where to go, thinking all I need is their damned directions!
Really, the ignorance is just stunning!

7. that is PERFECT!!! That is EXACTLY the kind of info and statistics we need! |
|
I've not hear this before, and now can't imagine why it didn't occur to me to try to find something like this.... I will add it to my Resolution, and I'm sure I'll find other uses for it, too.
If you can find the source, that would be terrific!

13. I've read that Steve Gutenburg's main issue is homelessness... |
|
Apparently he contributes to many things involving homeless ness.
Let's keep him in mind with this....
