Thanks for posting this, Beaverhausen. As a former elementary school teacher and professor of education, I can attest to the dire need in many schools. Not only do they not have basic supplies, the facilities are often substandard. I remember sitting at the back of a classroom one winter day with a coat and gloves on watching one of my student teachers teach a math lesson. The cracks in the wall were so wide that paper and tape were used in an attempt to keep out the blowing snow. It didn't work. The poor kids shivered and blew on their fingers and tried to listen. Great atmosphere for learning.
When I first started teaching in the 80s, we had two buckets in the classroom to catch dripping water when it rained. The district crews would come out when I complained loud and long enough and would patch the ceiling - not the roof where the problem really existed. Sure enough, next time it rained, the water came through again, but in another location, and the whole ordeal started again. I was told that it was cheaper to patch the ceiling than the roof.
I was always outraged to think that the conditions in many of our schools would be considered unacceptable for prisons.
