African American Poverty Hits Record High

Nationwide, USA - The poverty rate for African Americans has reached 27.4 percent, the highest level in four years, according to figures compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau this week.

“We can address the symptoms of poverty without getting to the root cause of it” says New York City Councilman Charles Barron

Barron represents one of the largest African American communities in the country. He says the American system of commerce and economic distribution is broken.

“We have to figure out how to deal with the structural flaws of capitalism. Capitalism has been a failure – even during the good times because during the good times black people in East New York, Brownsville, Harlem and the South Bronx were impoverished”
