Scratch a lie,
you'll find a thief." We were re-watching Ray last night and this phrase from Ray Charles' mother got me to thinking about my mother's maxims. I can only think of two though:

If a person lies, they'll cheat and steal.

Play with a dog, he'll lick you in the face. (obviously that's a bad thing...)

What sayings did your parents repeat with great conviction?

1. "meat is a taster-gooder, not a filler-upper"
-Said to explain why beans and rice made up the vast majority of a child's diet.

"never a borrower nor a lender be"

Erm, that's all I can remember for the moment...

4. What a great topic msgadget! I discussed this with my Mother and
unfortunately we couldn't come up with anything as original as "scratch a lie, find a thief". I loved that line in the movie and I was curious if that phrase was owned by Ray Charles or a screen writer. I'm currently reading a bio about Ray Charles "Ray Charles, Man and Music" by Michael Lydon. After watching that fabulous movie I wanted to know more about him.

Back to your question msgadget. I went to a web site called things your mom always said. I found a few "mom - isms" that my mother used while I was growing-up:

Pretty is as pretty does. :-)
Going to a party? Who's going to be there?
How can you have nothing to wear? Your closet is FULL of beautiful clothes!
Don't sit too close to the television, it'll ruin your eyes.
Always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident.
Are you going out dressed like that?
You can't depend on anyone so you MUST have an education. (Mom, you were right!)
