Play list confessions (puff piece!)
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 01:27 AM by msgadget
I was searching through my library compiling a play list that would help me survive working out (:wow:) and I've got some socially conscious stuff on it like Where is the Love by the Black Eyed Peas and something from the eternally heavy, Lauryn Hill, Doo Wop (That Thing) mixed in with Alicia Keys, Usher, Ciara...hell, I even have a Bonnie Raitt joint! My guilty pleasure is a li'l Fiddy on The Game piece, How We Do. It's the beats, y'all, 'cause the lyrics are... Don't hate, it's to survive cardio!!

Any of you other old heads with guilty listening pleasures? 'Fess up, don't leave me hangin' out here alone in sin land.

Edit to add: Actually I think The Staple Singers sorta...like...you know, make up for Fiddy... That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

1. OK Ms.G, I ain't gonna leave you hangin'. You know that jam called "Candy
Store"

LOL, now how is that for a work out? :bounce:

UG :hi:

PS: I also loved The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill CD (one for the car, one for the house). I'm a big fan of The Staple Singers and The Black Eyed Peas.

2. ROFL!
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 04:40 PM by msgadget
That's a really bad good one! Lawd ha' mercy, have you seen that video?? :bounce:

I've almost always got some classic 'Pac from his Me Against the World album. My kids used to shake their heads but I notice they're always borrowing it or I'll get in the car with my husband and hear, How Long Will they Mourn Me? or It Ain't Easy... and he's the one who brought the greatest hits compilation.

I need all the motivation I can get!

Edit to add: I read in an online fan forum (don't even ask how I ended up there 'cause I don't even know) that Ms Hill will probably be out with something soon because of Kanye's spirituality. Wouldn't that be somethin' - two POPULAR positive message artists at the same time...

3. 50 cent (lordy). I'm watching a bio of The Temptations on BET and
all of a sudden my TV goes to the Candy Shop video on MTV.

You know, I don't know where I fit in anymore. When I used to play all the Motown Cd's (that have been digitally/mastered remixed) my kids (and their friends) would look at me like MA?????

Well, what can I say about Candy Shop?? Like Paris Hilton says, "It's HOT!"

4. I give it all a shot
but when one of my kids heard me quoting The Source he was horrified so I backed off. :)

While I was rolling through my music library I came across Brownstone - still good! - En Vogue and Xscape... I'm watching Fantasia because so much has been made of this Joss Stone person that I wonder if a black soulful sista can make it big these days like Gladys and Aretha and Dionne and Dianna. They call Alicia Keys neo-soul, whatever the hell that is, but India Ari came on the scene hot and has faded away, Angie Stones is in and out, same with Jill Scott... Music was so much simpler before videos!

5. Gimme Aretha, Diana, Mary Wells, and Gladys' Midnight Train to GA any
day of the MTV, VH1/2, BET schedule. Oh how MUCH I would love to watch Marvin Gaye and The Temptations on MTV, et al.

There was a period of time that I lost a lot of music because of college. But when I returned to the real world, The Temps were gone!

I sorta, kinda 'got' Mariah Carey. I connected with Karen White and Laruyn Hill when their videos came out. Then, suddenly, they were gone. I just don't connect with Alicia Key, India Ari, Jill Scott and (Mom, don't bop me!) Fantasia.

Dionne Warwick was just something else in her sleek gowns and french rolls! Fantasia might know her and they might be friends, but as they say......Fantassia is no Dionne Warwik, IMOP.

6. Fantasia
is my momma's girl too, from American Idol. I bought so many copies of that CD for Christmas that I had to break down and listen! Damn, Fox even influences music tastes these days. LOL

What we need is another Barry Gordy.

7. Now you know that's right! He paved the way for so many.
I fear R&B is never going to have the impact that it did in the day when Berry was KING OF THE WORLD. In 1979 the evolution of hip-hop started with "Rapper's Delight"(motel, hotel, Holiday-Inn). To this day I know all the lyrics to the song for the simple reason that it was played and played and played, (you get the idea msgadget). But something caught on with that song and R&B has never been the same. Perhaps some will disagree with me, but I actually like the poetic rhythm of hip-hop. Take the "Candy Store" video for instance. It's about a man dreaming while waiting on the drive-thru. In that context, it's believable because the drive -thru line can be a long nightmare sometimes. So what to do? Think about your love life, LOL! I have to say, they pulled it off. Also, DESTINY'S CHILD has a video called "Soldier". One part of the lyrics says "they carry big things if you know what I mean". Well, we know the "big thing" is a weapon, but in the video the "big thing" is Beyonce's sister, Solange, and her pregnant (looks like 9mos,LOL) belly. So, it's an subliminal allusion that has some appeal.

While I like their music, I don't like their politics. According to a brief bio of Kelly Rowland (IMBD) the group supported and campaigned for Bush/Cheney in 2000:

"During the Bush/Cheney campaign in 2000, she was, along with all of Destiny's Child, a supporter of Bush."

I love music and I have eclectic tastes. I buy movie soundtracks because I love to hear the violins. :nopity:

BTW, great topic msgadget!

8. Get OUT, UGRR!
Beyonce an'em support their fellow Texan?! I can see a bare spot on my son's wall in the near future. Maybe I won't tell him - she is such a cutey...and young. Still... The Knowles are ultra smart and careful about image so maybe it was tactical, considering what happened to the Dixie Chicks.

Rapper's Delight, that was it, the beginning. Rap gets a bad...well, rap, because a lot of it is angry, materialistic, mysogynistic, etc. but the way they sample today... and the rhymes are just so smooth.. When I roll up to a light, the gangsta rhymes blaring are usually from the cars of white youngsters so it even - despite the lyrics - can be a common ground.

9. I agree. That common ground does seem to link all. Could RAP
be the answer to communication of issues in the black race? Maybe?

About Matthew Knowles are ultra smart and that's how I read it too msgadget. It did say 2000, not 2004. Matthew and Tina are old school civil rights. I trust them in the management of their daughter's careers.

They are a very talented family. I want to support that.

11. I hadn't thought of that
but I love (some) Mozart just as I like (some) techno. It's great for biking ...which is, evidently, the extent of my music appreciation. :silly:

Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 01:49 AM by msgadget
took no shortcuts, unlike some of the instant celebs these days or the greedy, pushy ones who get a lot of attention for little talent. They can vote for whomever they wish and still get no dis' from me. There are SOME who would...but not them. :)

:hi: Mina

Edit: Duh, I forgot to answer your (maybe rhetorical, but why take the chance?) question. Yeah, once again music can be a common ground. It was mainly through music that people got used to black and whites sharing venues after all.

13. My guilty pleasure is "Apache" by Sugarhill Gang
In case any of you are too young to remember, here's a sample...you'll know the song when you hear it:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/clipserve/B0000033K4001005/0/102-1670024-1120141

dun....dun dun dun...dun dun dun
Custer!!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!!!

dun....dun dun dun...dun dun dun
Apache!!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!!!

dun....dun dun dun...dun dun dun
Tonto!!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!!!

dun....dun dun dun...dun dun dun
Kemosabe!!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!!!

Okay....I know ...corny song, but when I was a kid I loved that song. Me and my friends had this really stupid dance we would do when I was a kid (we thought it was pretty cool back then).

Now I've gottem my six year old son to like it. I'll play it and we'll do the "get on your horse" dance when they say "Jump on it!! Jump on it!! Jump on it!!!"

Another guilty pleasure is "Jam On It," which is another favorite when I was little.

14. It was so upbeat,
how could you NOT be caught up by it? The fun rap that stuck with me for a long time was Flava in Ya Ear by Craig Mack - remember that one? I kept that intro on my computer forever and played it to fascinate my toddler into giving me some peace while I worked!

"Yo Mack, I don't even UNDERSTAND how they didn't understand you in
that Mary joint!"
"Yeah, I know, man."
"Kick that ol' robotic, futuristic, George Jetson, CRAZY JOINT!!"

Just...like... Uniblab, robotic kickin' flab
My flavor be the badder
chitter-chatter
Madder than the Mad Hatter

15. Stevie Wonder, Take 6, Chic Corea, Herbie Hancock, any old Motown or
New Orleans funk/jazz, but I especially like to listen to Brazilian jazz (chôro) when I work out - Pixinguinha, Jackson do Pandeiro, João Pernambuco, etc. Samba is great too because like chôro, it is very syncopated rhythmically. J.S. Bach and early baroque guys like Monteverdi and Gabrieli also tend to have a driving rhythm which is great for a workout.

Sometimes, though, if I listen to Claude Debussy, I forget that I am working out. :)
