in an attempt to clear their consciences and make themselves feel better
in the short term, it serves them and serves them well, but it hurts us all in the long run.

how can they not see that by virtue of being a slave, they are not and cannot be family members or even treated like a member of the fmaily...and then this person goes on to compare a human to a stick.

...a Master/Slave relationship is a dominant/subservient relationship, which in and of itself, is an abusive relationship. An abusive relationship is not a good one, irregardless of the kindness of the one who is the abuser.

I just read that, jesus christ, slaves weren't treated like family, what the hell was that person thinking, my family's history isn't too great but there is one thing I am proud of about my family history that there was no slave ownership ever. Jeez, revisionist history is right. Y'all did great in there btw against the bullshit.

and then they bring up the children of slaves who were the product of rape (how can it not be rape in a master/slave relationship?) ...it's not like a slave has much choice, you know?..and call that "being treated like a member of the family? They probably think Sally Hemmings was "in love"
I especially love "washington didn't like splitting up families"..but he for damn sure didn't mind owing them!
DU has it's share of slavery apologists it seems. They want to believe "it wasn't that bad" for some. How can it not be bad to be a human being and be owned?
It's like they think if a master patted his own child's head and then patted a slave child's heads, that's somehow equal treatment....they are constantly leaving out the "slave" aspect as if it didn't make the entire difference.

Yes its obvious that Sally Hemmings and those like her were not in love but taken advantage of. Slavery I think is one of the most disgraceful things about the country's history, it lasted 200+ years in this country from the first indentured servants to arrive in Jamestown in 1619 to the 13th amendment in 1865. The mere principle of slavery makes it wrong, and that is owning another human being which to me is one of the greatest wrongs. Thanks for the welcome by the way, I hear this is a pretty cool and welcoming place, so I may stop by often.

The master/slave dynamic can never approach anything close to equal...or "treated like they were members of the family"

What makes me even more angry is that these are the same people who HATE Lincoln and claim that HE was a racist. Like this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3604409&mesg_id=3605304&page=Jefferson was a huge hypocrite. At least when Lincoln said he hated slavery, he meant it and um...DIDN'T OWN SLAVES.

Lincoln was way better than Washington, Jefferson, etc because he did consider slavery wrong at least and he didnt yes ever own slaves. I'd take Lincoln over Jefferson any day honestly.

being performed to "feel OK" about despicable behavior. We revere those who IN THE MOMENT stand for what is right, good and difficult in the face of the most challenging circumstances. That is why history is so harsh to people who fall short of the glory so to speak.
You all have done an outstanding job on that thread! Mad props. I have had my own issues on another thread that is just as bad if not worse... :(

Sent it to a friend who is a top level IT professional. He thought I was yanking his chain and that this was a circa 1992 "opinion". I had to make myself rewrite my answer several times to pull the snark because I realized she/he literally did not know any better. Then it was off to reread Harry Potter. Voldemort was seemingly present everywhere!

I think people drink the kool-aid through their history books...and what the mainstream media feeds them. They think that is all gospel.
They don't think critically and objectively.
Then they try to practice their knowledge in DU and other places, where they receive the smackdown they truly deserve.
