OK, here is my test, how did I do out there?
Can you guys check my thread on racism out and tell me what I missed, what I could do better to understand how a white person can:

A - understand what is and isn't racist
B - know how to stand up for an issue without steam roller tactics
C - get feedback to educate myself

I feel like I did ok, and maybe it's a tough sell. Ask a white person to recognize their own racism and most head for the hills leaving lonely crickets, but I think it needs to be done. I don't know if it's freepers or if racism is really as rampant here as it seems to me, but it's got to improve for this party to move on and make a difference.

1. Well here is my mid term - it got to the greatest page
Racism on the DU. What do we do about it?

What I want to know is when someone makes a comment that seems racist how do we get a dialog going that educates, holds people accountable and yet doesn't belittle people who make these comments. It seems like that would be fair in some way, yet all it (seems to do) is make it harder for people who grew up with these little racist pieces to let them go.

*** I got started on this for many reasons, but mainly it pissed me off that someone put a really terrible video in one of the posts about the 5 year old who got handcuffed in Florida for having a tantrum at school.

*** I'm also trying to ratchet myself back because I get on a rampage when racism is pushed down to younger and younger kids.

*** I also cry everytime I read MLK's Letter From The Birmingham Jail because as far as we've come, we aren't realizing that dream and the neocons are trying to take US back to ways and means that are totally unacceptable.

2. I think you did an excellent job to the poster explaining the racism
referring to that video. The video itself isn't racism, but the poster referred to the woman in the video as the mother of the five year old. Wasn't funny at all. I didn't have to click on the link to see what video that was, the description was enough. That one has been floating around for a while.

3. Some people don't want to understand
Their education is limited to the MSM and accepted as gospel. We can type until our fingers fall off, but they will not be swayed.

I say, we keep on posting the truth, because the truth will eventually make us all free.

I think you held your ground, and we need more posts like that. As a mom of a kid out of K, I was frankly appalled at the school's reaction. There are appropriate ways to handle a child's anger, and that wasn't one of them. And I have my doubts about the mother's parenting skills also.

4. Although my opinion certinaly wasn't racist, but more a lack of knowledge
I posted a thread here that was orginally intended for the AA discussion board. Feel free it add it, reference it and/or to the discussion as how lurking and reading, attempting to understand the feel of someone else's shoes. Only if you think it will help.
