One of our great pioneers died on Monday. I felt that there would be an interest in this forum.

1. I remember Ebony and Jet arriving in the mail ...

every month when I was a kid in the early 1960s. It was the only positive media representation of black people -- and often the only media representation of blacks at all. Although these publications could be strangely flakey -- especially Jet -- Johnson did a great service.

5. Totally agree. Both Jet and Ebony (but more so with Jet) provided

an open dialogue about the African-American lifestyle in the United States. Even the prize winning photo of Emmett Till's mutilated corpse was first published in Jet Magazine. NO ONE would go there FIRST, but JET did.

To this day my mother has her "fan" of JET magazines on her coffee table and so do I.

We have lost a great man and I hope there will be lasting tributes in his name.

2. The article was on NPR this morning

a lot of the history of the beginnings of Ebony (1945) and Jet (1951) were facts that I didn't know. Definitely an individual that should be studied and highlighted.

for the link. Gosh I love this forum were I don't have to constantly explain myself. For instance going over to Nana's house and seeing 2 months worth of Jet magazines fanned out on her coffee table.

BTW, my salon still have Jet, to go along with the hair mags. Its amazing how something becomes so embedded in your culture w/o you even realizing it.

Today, I can't seem to get into it, unless it's a special event.

But I thought way back when in the early days, there was value in reading these magazines since, as many of us agree, this was the only publication company where Blacks were positively profiled.
