"They're not coming!" A Katrina story that is heart rending..

http://dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/8/2/104640/1838

Daily Kos has started a diary where people who lived through the horrors of Katrina could share their stories of survival.

I don't know the race of the person who wrote this story, but one part that really grabbed me was about the so-called "shooting" incidents that "made rescue of people in New Orleans impossible."

There is one part of the story where the author tells of himself and neighbors outside screaming up in the air at an airplane that they thought was carrying George Bush to view the distruction. They were all screaming uselessly, "FuckyouBush!, FuckyouBush! as the plane flew overhead.

The author of this diary relates his experiences as someone who lived in the swamps of LA and how he was witness to the fact that one gun shot was multiplied into a lie that there was a lot of shooting and looting going on to excuse not sending the Feds in to save the residents of the city. He is honest enough to show that his area in the swamps was restored to power when he knew that the city needed it far more than did his sparsely populated area.

Whoever he is...his story tells a lot between the lines. It is not very long so it is a very worthwhile read.

Think about this...we can send our marines into Iraq and into Lebanon where the insurgency is much more violent than a few gunshots in NOLA...

I hope that you take the time to read it and post your feelings about the story and about Katrina as we head into a one year anniversary of the tragedy.

This story is also posted at GD,(by a different DUer - not me) but I brought it over here in case anyone missed it and also because so many African Americans were mistreated during this crisis.
