There is a small sentimental spot in my heart for Jet Magazine. I have subscribed to the weekly for more than 40 years and prior to that, my parents received it. Every week I look forward to "The Week's Best Photos", "The National Report", and as corny as this may sound, the nuptial section of the magazine (yes, true love still rocks!). The photos are spectacular and I always find something interesting and new.

Are there any Jet Magazine subscribers/readers in our group? What are your thoughts about the magazine and it's evolution in black history?

1. Yep,

I get my subscription renewed every year for Christmas, Underground.

The first section I turn to, of course, is of the weddings and anniversaries! I LOVE seeing those couples married 50+ years, still lookin' fine. And, I always check out the couples to study their facial features and education to see if they've each made a good match. (to see if the guy looks shifty and because I read that if couples have similar features they have a longer marriage :eyes: ) Jet is very much a part of the culture I grew up with. In fact, I know people who don't buy newspapers or other magazines but who subscribe to Jet faithfully because it's what they grew up with as well.

Sometimes I'm a little impatient with the superficial coverage some issues receive and I'll admit it, the way they lay out the magazine sometimes is just horrible. But, I was reminded that Jet serves an audience that hearkens back to a time when it was the only news 'colored' people had that was exclusively theirs and the majority of the press they received was negative. I respect that and consider its longevity a remarkable accomplishment. What the heck do I know about layouts any damned way? :silly:

2. Ohhhh Msgadget! LOL, I also look at those coy couples (as they lovingly

GAZE into each other's eyes) with the same scrutiny and inspection! I'm like this one's a player and thinks he's all that. On the other hand, you have little Ms. coquette who graduated from the University of I'm gonna make you so into TV/microwave dinners that it ain't even funny. Oh and this one is trifling, lying and that one thinks he's better than HER. Oh, Ms.G, I love that you admitted this and I wonder if the editors at Jet Magazine know the significant reader interest in those couples and their fab jobs. Which is why I love to read about the couples who celebrate their marriage milestones. :hug:

I really agree that Jet Magazine, PRE-Internet, PRE-24 hour news, PRE-printed daily newspapers, has withstood them all, while, in the process, have made outstanding contributions in delivering important, significant and impacting news about African-Americans, good, bad and sometimes ugly. They have recently changed their format a bit ...conforming to a new generation while encompassing a youthful audience. But you know, that's all right with me. JET has always been a part of my life and it always will.

5. LOL I love Jet

I think it's the law that every black woman over a certain age has to have back issues of Jet fanned out on her coffee table. My grandma did. :)

I buy it every once in a while for a giggle. I like to read the gossip (as my mom says Jet tells it when no one else will!). :D I still think it's better than Ebony. Both of them are sort of stuck in the "First Black to do such-and-such" mold, but Jet at least doesn't take itself nearly as seriously.

Those Jet girls are kinda...rough, though. ;)

8. LOL, the fanned out copies of Jet on the coffee table. That's me to a "J"!

Hi Chovexani! Well, I'm definitely in the black woman "over a certain age category" and, yes, my Mother still fans the copies on her coffee table. I like to fan them too! Sometimes that "fan" is about to fall on the carpet, LOL! But I agree, Jet Magazine is a great gossip read. For instance in the current issue, I didn't know that Jermaine Jackson was getting divorced. Of course this is not the kind of "news" that matters but I like to know these things. It's cool ;-)

The Jet centerfolds are...well, IMO, archaic. I mean Miss American has been canceled by ABC . Does the public really care about women in bathing suits or am I just old fashioned?

BTW, the current issue of Jet has in-depth coverage of The Clinton Library. What Jet reported was a day prior to the official opening, President Clinton honored 100 African-Americans who made significant contributions in his life. So many names made the list. Even Clarence Avant, a former Motown writer, was mentioned. Aretha provided entertainment for the event. Now I wonder why this gala wasn't covered in the mainstream media?

11. ROFL! Those Jets were fanned out at a hair salon...

next to the Black hairzines not too long ago. Enjoyed reading them again and liked the couple pictures - and I was very careful to put them back as they were. The shop belongs to a lady of a certain age.

13. Back in the day sitting under that hot, HOT hooded dryer. Jet provided

a "cooling" respite from that heat. That's why I always opted for a press and curl.
