Why is Bill Cosby every bigot's go to guy?
Edited on Wed Mar-26-08 10:25 AM by SemiCharmedQuark
Ask any meaningful question on race, and give it about a half hour and here comes the "I agree with Bill Cosby". WTF? Does every race thread have to have a disclaimer: "Warning: Bill Cosby only speaks for Bill Cosby. Citations of Bill Cosby will not be accepted as evidence of any "truth".

1. He gets to do what they've always wanted to do
Cosby, white America's latest lawn jockey, basically says that all of the problems that black Americans face are caused by personal irresponsibility and moral failure. He says nothing of history nor the racial caste system that created the conditions that caused the problems in the first place.

3. Yeah, but for some reason, only Bill Cosby gets quoted here on DU.
I think Larry Elder is *too* conservative to be quoted here.

Side note: We support opposite candidates, but I have to say, from what I've seen, you've been a class act, even in GDP.

It has been really hard to be around DU lately, with all the racist and near-racist posts in relation to Jeremiah Wright and Obama. That stuff drives me wild, even as a Hillary supporter. I think it is mostly newbies drawn into DU by the primaries, but it still tells me something about how progressive people really are.

and the discussion in GD about White Privilege. Stunning level of ignorance.

on edit:
what made me think about it was a trend in GDP where OPs were linked to right-wing commentators, though the commentators name would not show. One was linked to a Shelby Steele anti-Obama screed, without Steele's name showing.

8. This primary has basically destroyed this site.
People on both sides are openly quoting right-wingers in support of their candidate and it's disgusting. People have lost their damn minds.

The bizarre thing is I agree with one thing Shelby Steele said, and that's his classification of blacks in the public eye as Bargainers vs. Challengers. I don't like the conclusions he then comes to, or any of the other bizarro land bullshit he spouts.

5. Cosby gets the quotes
because he's been on the "let's get those poor black people" tour for the past few years. Also, his is a more recognized name than Steele and the other intellectual lawn jockeys.
