4. In fairness, all dems bent over backwards today so as NOT to

appear to be sore losers. Instead, they wanted to highlight voter disenfranchisement and how puny the efforts re HAVA have been even after the astounding debacle that was the 2000 presidential election. It was the other side who brought up terms like sour grapes, conspiracy theories, etc. and DeLay even accused the dems of painting the prez as some sort of closet computer geek who personally fixed the election. I can't speak for the man, but I'm sure this is the reason he said that.

24. It's called "playing the game"

Which I believe Obama will be very good at. Please don't let one statement color your entire perception of him. He wants to succeed--no thrive--and do good for ALL Americans!

Lest you forget what happened to Carol Mosley Braun, working with the GOB (good ol' boys) of the Senate if you are not a member of the club takes a lot of schmoozing and finesse. I back BOTH my Senators (Durbin and Obama) 110% and am proud as hell to live in a Blue state, no matter how badly Daley screws up sometimes.

Sen. Obama is not perfect. But he is a professional and has the interests of the American people (not the American corporations) at the forefront--always. He will do his best to succeed in an openly hostile environment and sway the agenda back to the center. Those of you who are so quick to judge do not have perspective. I am from IL. I remember what the Senate and the media did to Sen. Braun. She was drawn and quartered for minor transgressions. Instead of lambasting him, you should be singing Obama's praises for knowing how to play the game. I predict my Senator will become a force to be reckoned with and will be pivotol in revamping Senate control in years to come.

3. Obama's a freshman with a heavy load of Expectation on his shoulders.

And, his first vote was a slap in the face for some. He's going to get a LOT of press, especially with so many controversial votes on the agenda. Imo, he's an unknown, to be given no more or less faith than the other pols sitting next to him.

But, you have to admit the big broohaha made about him is precisely because he's black. There's no denying that's why he got all the coverage and a slot to speak at the convention. He's certainly not the only accomplished freshman this year.

5. Obama is suffering the slings and arrows

of outrageous fortune because he is black, a rising political star and the latest Lonely Only. His message today was mixed and some expectations were for some sort of message purity. The presidential candidate conceded and said * won. Not a lot of wiggle room for a professional politician in that situation.

I am with you on the wait and watch to see what he does next and what he chooses as his signature pieces.

7. Obama wants to be President

And he's got a good shot at it. He knows his chances will be diminished if a) he becomes known as a Black leader, and b) if he becomes known as a "liberal senator". So he's a realist. I'm not. I'm an idealist.

However, I think Obama is very concerned at just how divided this country has become and he knows that this division is based partly on race, and that minorities are the biggest losers in this divided atmosphere. I honestly believe one of Obama's bigger goals right now is to try to unite the country and get us all working together again. He thinks the country is ready to heal given the right leadership (personally I'd rather remain divided so that someday we can kick the asses of the ignorant wing of the Republican Party!)

I feel conflicted. Obama is one of the few Democrats that has a good chance of kicking the current plutocrat/theocrats out of power, and I do miss the days when Americans wanted to be respected in the world. On the other hand, if he and the Democratic Party become centrist, GOP-lites, I will have to leave the party.

I think it's too early to give up on Obama. I'm more interested in how he votes and leads than on what he says.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that he is not nearly as "centrist" as you suggest. Ya'll gotta realize that he's in hostile territory and under a brightly lit magnifying glass that's in a fishbowl (mixed metaphors were intentional, thank you very much). As you said, he's new to the national scene. And he certainly doesn't want to wind up like Carol Mosley Braun did. As you said, we have to cut him some slack and let him get his damn feet wet! I suspect he and Sen. Durbin (D-IL) will have important roles to play in getting the good ol' boys club to swing back toward the center, let alone the left side, of the pendulum.

Keep the faith! We backed a real winner here in IL--in more ways than one.

Expectation that he should be "perfect" in the minds of those who have their own agenda is pretty ridiculous.

When I look at most politicians, they are doing "jack sh*t" and are far, far less than perfect.

I believe that the Right loves it when we turn against our own at any infraction that displeases us.

We must allow Barack Obama the time to show us who he is and what he stands for. A rush to judgement about his character, his intent and his agenda....does a great disservice to all of us.

27. The best thing Obama can do for black voters

is to get reelected. I don't say that lightly. He can't do anything for his constituencies, whether they be African Americans, liberals, or ordinary Illinois voters if he doesn't gain and hold on to power. He could go up and spit fire like Al Sharpton every time he speaks in Senate, and the Republicans would very deftly paint him as racially divisive. Its sucks, but its true. Let him get big and strong, get powerful committees and a lot of influence and he'll do for all of us.
